Official Club Statement: Krul Injury Update - 5 Week Rumour

Newcastle United goal keeper Tim Krul has been assessed by medical staff after sustaining an ankle injury in the final minutes of last nights game against FC Metalist. Krul collided with Cristaldo and went to ground holding the ball to his chest with one hand and his ankle with the other. The club have now released an official statement about the injury.

It reads;

"Newcastle United can confirm that Tim Krul was assessed by medical staff on Friday and sent for a scan on Friday afternoon after sustaining an ankle injury in Thursday night's Europa League match against Metalist Khrakiv in the Ukraine.

Krul is now scheduled to see an ankle specialist on Monday for further assessment, after which time the Club should be able to provide another update."

Earlier today Krul spoke to NUFC.co.uk about last night's game. He said;

"I'm really pleased, of course. It's nice to be important and to make a contribution to the team.

We defended well - there were some great blocks and I think we showed some of the qualities that we did last season with everybody working for each other.

Everybody had to put a lot of hard graft in. We showed a lot of spirit towards the end but it's worth it, definitely. I think we did really well today.

We knew if we scored one it was going to be difficult for them to come back because they had to score two and we're really pleased to go through.

It's massive for the club to be in the last 16 of the Europa League. I think that's where we belong. And it's great for the club like Newcastle to be in the draw for the last 16.

We're going to Anzhi [Makhachkala] now and that's a great prospect which I'm really looking forward to."

Krul left the Ukraine yesterday with his foot in a protective boot and on crutches.

Speculation is rife that he could be out for up to five weeks. Rob Elliot will now step up for games which may include Southampton (h), Stoke City (h), Swansea City (a), Wigan Athletic (a) and both games in the Europa League against Anzhi Makhachkala.

Fingers crossed and hoping the news won't be as bad when he's seen the specialist.
