Rob Elliot made his Premier League debut for Newcastle United today against Southampton, pulling off a string of excellent saves and getting the assist for Cisse’s goal, Newcastle’s second goal of the game. The match started badly for Elliot, after Lambert nodded the ball to Morgan Schneiderlin who scored in the 4th minute. After picking the ball out of the back of the net Elliot’s game could only get better and better.

After Schneiderlin scored the opening goal, Newcastle equalised through Moussa Sissoko in the 32nd minute, followed by a Papiss Cisse goal in the 41st.

The team congratulated Elliot after a brilliant save, boosting the keepers confidence, which was evident throughout the rest of the game.

Shortly after, Fabricio Coloccini was replaced by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa in the 45th having landing heavily on his back. Newcastle went into half time with a 2-1 lead but Southampton were once again on form immediately after the break with Adam Lallana providing an assist for a Rickie Lambert goal, his 100th for Southampton.

In the 65th minute Southampton’s goal scorer Schneiderlin took down Yoan Gouffran who was awarded a penalty kick, converted in the 66th minute by Yohan Cabaye.

James Perch made his 250th appearance for Newcastle in the 76th minute, replacing Cabaye shortly before it was game over for Southampton, whose Jos Hooiveld made it 4-2 to Newcastle with an own goal in the 78th minute of the match.

Throughout the game there were yellow cards for Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez (24th), Luke Shaw (40th), Maya Yoshida (73rd) and Gaston Ramirez (86th), whilst Steven Taylor was booked for Newcastle in the 86th minute as well.

1653 away fans travelled to the North East for the game today. The full attendance at St James Park was 52,259.

Newcastle have now won their first ever League game under Alan Pardew after conceding first.

Well done to Elliot and the rest of the lads.I didn't see the game so cannot comment but am looking forward to the highlights later on.
