Newcastle United host Sunderland FC tomorrow in the highly anticipated Tyne-Wear derby. Newcastle go into the game, having drawn against Benfica in midweek, but failed to get through to the semi-finals of the Europa League. Despite an overall defeat across both legs, the side was awarded a standing ovation when they left the pitch and it is unlikely that they will let Thursday’s outcome spoil their performance tomorrow.
Newcastle have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games in all competitions, whilst Sunderland have lost four and drawn two. For the first time in a long time Newcastle go into a game with the upper hand from their last six games.
Alan Pardew will be looking for those additional three points to guarantee the clubs safety from a relegation battle, whilst Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio knows that defeat is not an option, with his side only out of the bottom three on goal difference.
Fabricio Coloccini (back), Davide Santon (hamstring) and Cheik Tiote (hamstring) are all unavailable, but a fully recovered Hatem Ben Arfa played on Thursday and is expected to start, whilst Steven Taylor (knee) is winning his race to be fit and Mathieu Debuchy should be available.
Yoan Gouffran will return to the team after being sidelined against Benfica due to ineligibility and Yanga-Mbiwa (knock) should be okay.
Sunderland are expected to have Carlos Cuellar (ankle) and Danny Graham (knee) available, but Connor Wickham (knock) could remain sidelined.
Titus Bramble (calf) and Steven Fletcher (ankle) remain long term absentees for the club as do Lee Cattermole (knee) and Wes Brown (MCL knee), whilst Craig Gardner is suspended for collecting his 10th yellow card of the season against Chelsea last weekend.
Pardew said ahead of the game;
“I am looking at three points. No more than that. I want to win this game more than any Newcastle fan – as much as our most ardent fan. It is so important for building to next year.
I need to put this season to bed and get rid of this worry we have of relegation. The sooner I can do that, the sooner I can focus on next year.”
Fact: Sunderland last won against Newcastle in 2008. Since then they have D4, L2.
Fact: Newcastle have just won four consecutive League home matches for the first time since March/April 2012.
Fact: Sunderland have not won in 9 Premier League games (D3, L6).

sunderland are at a point in their season where they are going to need start taking risks to win their remaining matches and we need to exploit this!

It's one of those games when usually the build up is harder to handle than the match. Not long to wait now any sort of win will do for me! C'mon you mighty mags. My stomach is in knots that might be the Guinness from last night having said that!

See Simpson has been dropped again. (from the whole thing). Bit harsh I think he hasn't played badly the last few games. Could have at least had him on the bench.

We deserved what we got nothing I'm worried now about the rest of the season the effect that result will have on the players. We were second best today and we need to improve in our remaining games.
They were fired up more than we were and all the goals were well taken. I am pleased I live in Surrey after results like that because apart from me no one will give a toss!

I've had 3 messages so far along the lines of "whoops" but I agree sometimes living down south has its advantages.

Pardew cannot defend that performance and nor can the fans. We were awful and the players need to understand that.
They need to get their @#$%& into gear and realise that being consistently inconsistent is not acceptable and that now the Europa League is over we HAVE to concentrate on the league.
Its's all very well aspiring for European Football but there is jack all point if we play like this after every midweek game.

Just got home after driving 200 miles there then 200 back an it was a long journey after having to suffer that ! Complete utter joke . Not one player on the pitch can claim to have played a good game and all gave away possesion far too often and Alan pardew should hang his head in shame for the tactics also as we have reverted back to giving the ball to the keeper and punting it upfield or just booting it into the box and hoping for the best .... Cisse doesn't score from that kind of play he plays much better off the through balls yet pardew stuck with his tired game plan throughout and look what it got us , in fact he should do more than hang his head in shame if he doesn't sort it out soon he should roll his 7 year contract up stick it where sky dont broadcast and walk back to London as I'm well an truly tired of watching stoke style football when we have players capable of so much better

At least I think that Saylor had a decent game..
Our players seemed to have lost a bit of focus, and was still tired from our midweek game.
Maybe the loss to Benfica has done more mental damage than it should have.

Well I have to admit it Sunderland were the better team, however I do not think they played amazing, I think it was a case of we played absolute utter tripe. My biggest moans are probably against Tiote and Gutierez who I thought were absolutely terrible with their passing, every time they give the ball away. Cabaye and MArveux also give the ball away far too much with very poor set pieces, can anyone actually remember last time we were dangerous from a corner or freekick out wide? Why can they not get height on the ball and beat the first man? Massive shame about Krul he will be missed for the run in, luckily I think we will be ok and pick up the required points but I cannot see us finishing any higher than 14 now after that terrible show. Their goals were very soft goals and the defence looked shot to peices, why was haidara not playing ? As said above Cisse is not a target man we should of been playing much more aggressively at home against the mackems why not start with 2 or even a full 3 up front. Sissoko is a CM or even DM not a number 10 ffs.

I remember when I was younger going to all the matches the stadium would be chanting/singing all the way through every match and even more so a local derby > On Sunday there was barely any noise coming from them, the fans should intimidate the opposition and make themselves the 12th man like they did against Benfica. The fans who were chanting that game got right behind the team, supported them and encouraged them, while on Sunday I thought they were poor from start to finish.

Ive just been watching the videos of all the trouble, most of them are youngings by the looks of it, probably the same lot throwing bricks at the benfica coach little knackas the lot of them. They are not true fans of our club, people like them really make my blood boil.

The atmosphere was brilliant to begin with and when Sunderland scored it only ramped it up a notch with everyone willing the team to get back in it but after half time I admit it died a bit . But having said that it was no more than the team deserved after the awful showing on offer I for one got fed up of watching marveux give up chasing the ball and not willing to jump and fight for the headers and he is just one example of the ten outfield players failings on Sunday as all were just as culpable in one way or another ! but mostly to blame imo would be pardew for his disastrous tactics not only in this game but most of the season with his long ball upfield from the keeper which inevitably loses possesion and invites pressure back on our defence , then there's the fact that he persist with crosses into the box when it is clear to see that cisse isn't going to score regularly from headers he prefers to run onto through balls or to skip past the last defender - this is why I think he finds himself offside so regularly as trying to get on crosses is not his natural style of play .
And lastly the fact we haven't scored from a corner or indirect free kick all season is a complete joke has he even been practising any kind of game plan in training or just sat there smiling whilst looking at his 7 year contract ? Last years manager of the season is this years wooden spoon he needs to get his act together soon or do the honourable thing and walk
I hope he does get it together as stability is needed but I'm getting kinda worried that he can't see the obvious misgivings of his current tactics or lack of them

Depends on how we go until the end of the season. If we stay up comfortably he will stAy by the skin of our teeth which I think it will be then it should be time for a change but doubtful whether that would happen.

I dont think he'll leave or should be leaving, next season will be totally different, we all know and so does Pardew that we dont have the squad to play on a thursday night and then again on the Sunday, other than Gouffran the team that played on Sunday had either just returned from injury or had played on the thursday and hadn't trained since wednesday!
We'll see next season how well Everton and Wigan cope with all the extra games.

Just to point out I don't actually want him to leave as stability is better than constantly changing besides hes the best we can get at the min and only manager who would work for ashley just making the point that blaming the euros for some woefull displays is not acceptable .
