Are NUFC In For Kone Or Not? - Conflicting Reports

Earlier today BBC Sport confirmed that Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan had accepted offers from both Everton and Newcastle United for striker Arouna Kone, with the decision of where to go left to the Ivory Coast International. However, despite only a £5million release clause in the 29 year old's contract, The Chronicle are now reporting that Newcastle have cooled their interest in the player because he doesn't fit in with the club's buying policy.

Whilst Everton have confirmed that they have made an approach for the player, Newcastle have remained quiet on their involvement. However it would be unreasonable to rule an approach out, especially as Joe Kinnear has made it clear he will deal with transfers, and there is no reason to believe that wouldn't result a change in the clubs transfer policy.

The SportsDirectNews website site broke the news of Newcastle's interest earlier today, and Kone, whose release clause was activated when Wigan were relegated to the Championship, would be seen as a much cheaper option to Darren Bent, who would cost significantly more to sign.
