Why England will never win anything, without a Gazza!

touch of greatness.

There are three sorts of teams that Win world and European cups.

The first is a well disciplined team, who act as a unit, I mean arguably in my lifetime the best side not to win a World cup have been the Dutch side of the 70s, a generation later though playing the same style of football they did land a European cup.

Second, is a side with a midfield general think Andrea Pirlo in 2006, or Zinedine Zidane in 1998?

Third is a side with a touch of genius, Maradona in 1986 being the prime example.

In all my years of watching football, only one English player has fit that bill, Paul Gascoigne.

Look at the two games so far in this world cup, the difference between Italy and England was one man Andrea Pirlo.

He slowed the game down at will, and you could feel that a killer pass was going to come at some point, now name anyone in the England side capable of doing that?

Fast forward to Uruguay, I am sure there cannot be too many arguments when I say the real difference last night in the teams was Luis Suarez.

Again name one player in the England side capable of doing that?

In my lifetime, despite producing many good players, they have only ever produced one that was capable of adding something different, something out of the norm. Something in short to win a game, they would have otherwise lost or drawn and that player was Paul Gascoigne.

Now I am not sure how you go about creating someone like Gazza, or even if it’s possible, I assume players touched with genius are born not created.

Look at Argentina’s opening match.

They were struggling, until a moment of magic by Messi, won the game.

Who does England have that can do anything like that?

So the sad fact is, until they either create a real midfield general, or another Gazza is born, England will continue to completely underwhelm.

I didn't put this in the article, becuase it was nothing to do with it, but can anyone explain to me why Sterling was taken off last night?

how did gerrard and Henderson manage to stay on the pitch as long as they did, we have no midfield what so ever, i think Gerrard and Lampard will announce their international retirements pretty soon and their's nobody waiting to replace them.
