Knights Power Back to Shock Edinburgh in Ten-Try Pre-Season Thriller

Doncaster Knights showed grit and guile in equal measure on Friday night as they overturned a heavy early deficit to claim an impressive 43–33 victory away to Edinburgh Rugby.

It was a night that underlined the Knights’ character. The home side’s youngsters came flying out of the blocks at Hive Stadium, racing into a 21–5 lead inside the first quarter. Edinburgh’s pace and ambition had Doncaster on the back foot, but once the Knights found their rhythm, the contest swung dramatically.

Matt McNab’s direct running got Doncaster on the scoreboard before Ryan Olowofela added another to steady nerves. Captain Rhys Tait then capped a spell of forward dominance by crashing over just before half-time. Despite trailing 28–24 at the break, the momentum was beginning to turn.

The second half belonged to the Knights. Their pack tightened its grip on proceedings, carrying hard and disrupting the breakdown, while the backs grew increasingly clinical. Aidan Cross finished off a flowing move to give Doncaster the lead for the first time, before Jordan Olowofela and replacement Sol Moody stretched the advantage. Moody, full of pace and poise, grabbed a brace to put the seal on a famous pre-season win.

Head coach Joe Ford was delighted with the response:

“We were under the cosh early, but the lads showed belief. Once we settled into our systems, we looked sharp, and the second half was really pleasing. It’s exactly the sort of test we wanted.”

 

Fans’ Verdict

The Knights’ travelling support made themselves heard throughout, and they left buzzing at the performance.

“To come up here and put 40 points on Edinburgh, whatever team they put out, is no mean feat,” said long-time fan Alan Smith. “You could see the belief grow as the game went on. That second half was vintage Donny grit.”

 

The Way Forward

The victory will give Doncaster valuable confidence heading into their Championship campaign. The forward pack once again showed it can compete with higher-level opposition, while the Olowofela brothers offered cutting edge in attack. Moody’s eye-catching cameo will also give Ford selection headaches of the best kind.

There are still lessons to absorb — the early defensive lapses that saw Edinburgh rack up three quick tries cannot be repeated against league rivals — but the signs are encouraging.

With tough trips ahead in the Championship calendar, the resilience shown in Edinburgh will stand the Knights in good stead. If Doncaster can bottle the energy of their second-half display, Butts Park could see plenty more nights to savour this season.
