De Vos: Clubs Could Fold

Town captain Jason De Vos feels that clubs in the lower leagues could fold as they try to reach the premier league.

As from next season the club finishing bottom of the premiership will receive £30million in prize money, as much as Chelsea made for winning it last season, something De Vos thinks could cause clubs to over stretch themselves trying to reach the top flight and pay the price.

 

De Vos: “The money that's in the Premiership now is obscene.

 

“Take the Lucas Neill deal this week. Not being disrespectful but how can a footballer be worth £70,000 a week - unless perhaps he is bringing in massive spin-offs for his club.

 

“Neill says that money wasn't the reason he joined West Ham. I can't see that for one minute. It must have been a major influence and who can blame him for going.

 

“While clubs will pay those wages, boosted by foreign investment, the madness will go on but the game as a whole will suffer and we could end up with a situation where we have an elite small number of professional clubs and then the rest being semi-pro.

 

“I'm sure clubs will start to go to the 'wall' in the not too distant future, clubs that are willing to gamble all on getting to the promised land - but don't make it.”
