Town legend Sir Bobby Robson plans to raise £500,000 to fund the opening of the ‘The Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trial And Research Centre'.
Sir Bobby, who has had surgery to remove cancer from his body four times wants to raise the money to fund the centre that will be at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
"I am going to try and raise a lot of money, £500,000, for a cancer research centre, which is very much needed in the North East. "I know the people who are going to run it and they are short of money.
"So I am going to help raise this money and give my name to this charity.
"I must say that the people here in the North East have saved my life, have kept me going and have done a wonderful job on me and I owe them something back.
