Report: Watford 2-1 Town

Town slipped to a third defeat in four league games when they lost 2-1 against Watford at Vicarage Road yesterday afternoon.

Town took the lead after just 2 minutes when Mart Poom fluffed a clearance straight into the path of Pablo Counago who managed to keep the Watford defence at bay and place the ball into the bottom corner of the goal for his second of the season.

Watford were out classed by Town in the opening stages and could have been 2-0 down if it wasn't for Kevin Lisbie being greedy and trying to chip the ‘keeper and send the ball wide instead of squaring the ball to Counago who was in space just a few yards to Lisbie's right.

Tamas Priskin thought he should have been awarded a penalty after falling in the Town box but the referee correctly spotted Priskin tripped over his own feet and not those of Richard Naylor.

Jon Harley thought he had brought Watford level in the 36th minute when he beat Volz to a header which beat Wright in the Town goal only to hit the inside of the post and bounce into Wright's arms.

Watford started the second half intent on scoring and if it wasn't for Wright they would have scored much sooner then they did. Priskin was denied a headed goal by the finger tips of Wright who some how managed to get the ball out for a corner which was gathered by Wright.

Jon Walters was set free by Lisbie in the 56th minute but Poom was equal to Walters' effort.

John Eustace got his first goal for Watford when he managed to lose his marker from a corner and head home.

Town were lucky not to be 2-1 behind just minutes later when Richard Wright was unable to hold on to a Jobi McAnuff shot which rolled just inches in front of the line before Wright could put an arm out to force it round the post for a Watford corner.

McAnuff was denied by a Richard Naylor challenge when he was just 5 yards out with the goal in front of him, Naylor's challenge pushing the ball onto the bar and out for a corner.

Town's luck finally ran out with three minutes to go when John Joe-O'Toole made the most of Richard Wright not being able to hold on to another shot and headed home.

Ipswich Town: Wright; Volz, McAuley, Naylor, Thatcher; Walters, Campo, Miller, Trotter (Shumulikoski 80); Counago (Rhodes 73), Lisbie (Haynes 65). Substitutes: Supple, Balkestein.
