Smith Breaks Ankle

Town defender Tommy Smith has been ruled out of action for at least 6 months after breaking his ankle while training earlier today.

Town physio Matt Byard: "Tommy is in hospital and will undergo surgery when the swelling has settled down, he has a badly broken ankle and ligament damage and will need an operation to repair the joint. That will take place sometime this week, when the surgeon feels it's the right time.

"The injury came about in the last five minutes of training. He went to make a challenge and twisted on his right ankle. It is a bad injury and he was in a lot of pain.

"He has already shown terrific strength of character in the way he has dealt with it though and the staff in the emergency ward at Ipswich Hospital have been fantastic and have really looked after him well during the day.

"Recovery wise, you are probably looking at maybe three to four months before he is able to really start his rehabilitation and then maybe another two months before he is back playing football, so a return towards the end of the season is possible."
