Martin On Witch Hunts

A lot has been made out of David Norris' goal celebration on Saturday, so much so that he made the BBC 6 o'clock news, the first time The Championship has even been mentioned there. Here is my view on the situation.

David Norris, as I'm sure you are all aware, celebrated his goal against Blackpool with a crossed arm gesture, allegedly as a private message to Luke McCormick who is currently in jail for causing death by dangerous driving while driving home from David Norris' wedding in the summer.
My point is that I am feed up with the way the media whip up a frenzy over minor actions, looking for heads to roll. Well, David although pretty much the entire world seems to want you hung from the floodlights at the moment as with the current fuss surrounding Brand/Ross, which only 2 people complained about after hearing it live, and the recent ‘lets jump on the bandwagon' Clarkson episode, I would like to offer my support. I would like to point out neither myself or David are condoning drink driving, despite what the parents of the two boys who were killed in the summer seem to think, "He should be given a ban. Norris is doing this in front of thousands of supporters including children, and sending out the wrong message that we can drink and it is OK to kill someone." anyone who remains friends with some one who is in jail for just that offence, is just the kind of unconditional friend you want. At this time of the year we are reminded of the fact that many people gave their lives for us to have the freedom we have today, that includes freedom of speech and actions, please lets not allow our fear of political correctness censor us more than Hitler could ever of done.
Luke McCormick will have to live the rest of his life knowing he did something insanely stupid, which caused the death of two young boys, which is not what he wanted when he set off down the M6. To have someone show a very public sign of support for him will certainly mean a damn sight more then a letter ever would, no matter how much readers of certain newspapers think it will.
David, I have seen you say sorry to the family for any distress caused, while some people may see this as the right way to go I would like to disagree. Any apology that is forced out of someone by the media is not a true apology and worst of all it takes away from the grand gesture he made for Luke. There are much more important things going on in the world, has any one seen any more news from Congo, Darfur, the Romanian orphanages or human right abuses in China? Thought not.

And before anyone says about Pattison drink driving i certainly did not condone his actions either, i dont agree with the witch hunt after Norris but i do think he could have made things easier by admitting it was a handcuff gesture instead of the bo11ocks he has come out with, i do admire Norris for standing by his friend Luke McCormick but lets never forget the poor woman who has lost two sons, a real tragedy.
As a father of two boys i can tell you that if a drunk driver killed them, there would be nowhere safe on earth until i had hunted them down and beat them to death!
