Report: Town 0-0 Plymouth
By Aston
January 31 2009
Town let two points slip through their fingers earlier today against Paul Sturrock’s Plymouth Argyle at Portman Road.
Town made two changes from the side that beat Barnsley in mid-week, Counago and Garvan coming in for Lisbie and Quinn. New signing Luciano Civelli didn't make the Town 16.
Town's first chance came after just 6 minutes, Jon Stead headed an Owen Garvan corner goal wards only for Roman Larrieu to parry the ball off the line to Counago who fired the ball back towards goal only to see it kicked away to Balkestein whose effort was deflected out for another corner.
Town had claims for a penalty waved away after Counago went down in the box, under the arm of Marcel Seip.
Stead missed out on giving Town the lead with an acrobatic volley from a Jon Walter's cross, seeing his effort cannon off the post.
Plymouth were perhaps lucky not to have gone a man down just past the half hour mark, Jamie Mackie bringing down Alex Bruce.
Plymouth's main chance of the first half came two minutes before half time, Miller brought down Jamie Mackie on the edge of the box, conceding a free kick, Paul Gallagher's kick was parried by Wright, who reacted well to deny Simon Walton from a follow up header.
Plymouth started to get into the game in the second half, Wright being forced to deny an effort from Gallagher, while Rory Fallon hit the bar from the left wing before Wright held Mackie's header.
Jon Walters blazed over the bar from 10-yards after getting behind the Plymouth back line. Kevin Lisbie replaced David Norris soon after.
Chris Clark fired over for Plymouth in the 66th minute as Plymouth continued to frustrate Town at the back and look dangerous on the break.
Danny Haynes came on for Jon Stead in the 73rd minute as Town tried using pace to get behind the Plymouth defence.
Walters was denied by a Plymouth defender, Garvan was ruled offside as Town continued pressing for a goal.
Haynes fired wide in the 87th minute and at the other end Mackie thought he had given Plymouth the lead, only to be ruled offside.
