Feb-AUG 1936

Football had been playing in Ipswich since 1870. Starting at the Ipswich School it was amateur then it started as a forerunner of the main Ipswich Town which started up in 1878.

For 50 years they kept Professional football away. 1907 Ipswich left the Norfolk and Suffolk League and joined the southern League where they then was fully in Amateur football.

In the 1930's Ipswich was the largest Town in England that was not a Professional team. People where not happy with the quality of football at the club at Portman Road in 1935.

March 1935 Portman Road hosted a game between Suffolk county FA and Arsenal. The game arranged by Suffolk Fa President Captain John Murry Cobbold. Three months after he was made President of Ipswich Town FC.

People started calling for Ipswich to become professional but alot wanted it to stay amateur cause of the Hockey and Cricket was player there as well.

In Feb 1936 A letter went into the Evening Star by a

Leonard P Thompson saying he wanted support to make Ipswich Town FC professional. He had a huge response and within two weeks Ipswich became Ipswich United FC.

April 1936

1,000 filled the Public hall and it was the formation of Ipswich becoming Professional and Ipswich United FC.

Two weeks after the Amateur team had a meeting and it was to make sure they stayed Amateur and apart from the Professional team. It was decieded that they would play still at Portman Road but with them playing alternate Saturdays.

Now a days it would not happen but back then they did not want to give up on either.

Cobbold return from Canada and was in favour of the professional club. A week later another meeting and it was decided the two teams would merge and become the single club Ipswich United FC.

Ipswich United never lasted it did not even last to see a game played it become Ipswich Town FC June 1936.

It was not certain if they would carry on playing at Portman Road as it was still for Amateur sport only. Meetings happen and in July the ground was turn to Professional.

By July the Team got their Color of Royal Blue Shirt With white sleeves with the coat of arms on white background. It was unique the two color's in English Football.

29th Aug 1936 The shirt was worn for the first time in action and professional football came to Ipswich.

Answer Professional Football came to Ipswich.
