Former Ipswich Town loanee Alan Mahon would like to see Town finish the season in an automatic promotion place.

Mahon who was on loan at Town last season from Blackburn Rovers before being sold to Wigan and making his Latics debut against Town a few days later.

Mahon and the rest of the Wigan side visit Portman Road next Tuesday and the winner of that match will go top of the championship table, some where both Town and Wigan would like to be and Mahon would rather it was Wigan but wouldn’t mind Town coming in second in may.

Mahon: “With both of us going well at the moment, it's going to be a massive match, it's the biggest game of the season in the Championship so far and whoever wins will be top of the table at Christmas.

“We know Ipswich are flying at the moment and Joe Royle has a fantastic ability to get the best out of his players so it's going to be a tough game for us. But it will be a tough game for Ipswich as well.

“Both clubs believe they have what it takes to win promotion and if I had my way, we'd both go up. In an idea world I'd like to see Ipswich win automatic promotion and finish second in the table - behind us of course.”
