Report: Plymouth Vs Town
Ipswich Town got back to winning ways and put light between them and the rest of the Championship after beating Plymouth 2-1.
Two goals from Darren Currie in the second half were enough to see of the pilgrims and send Town 5 points clear of Wigan who play Wolves tonight.
Town manager made two changes to the side that lost to West Ham on new years day, Arsenal youngster Daniel Karbassiyoon came in for Matt Richards and Kevin Horlock started in place of Jim Magilton and the changes paid off as Town kept the ball down and tried to play football unlike Plymouth who seemed content with hoofing the ball from one end of the pitch to the other.
Towns first real chance came 4 minutes into the game when Kevin Horlock’s blocked shot was followed up by Jason De Vos but was well held by Larrieu in the Plymouth goal.
Darren Bent had the chance to give Town a 10th minute lead when Shefki Kuqi sent the England under 21 striker though on goal only for Larrieu to take the ball away from Bents toe’s.
Plymouth captain Paul Wotton come close to opening the scoring with his 20-yard free kick but Town ‘keeper Kelvin Davis was up to the task and pushed the ball out for a corner.
Bent again went close to putting Town in front, turning his marker but striking the ball just wide of the post, Bent later tried to set up Ian Westlake who looked perfectly placed to convert but was pulled back in the box, referee Dermot Gallagher feeling other wise.
A rare mistake from Jason De Vos almost allowed David Friio to send his side into the lead, thankfully his volley flew just wide of the upright.
Town finally broke the deadlock in the 67th minute after Bent was brought down Plymouth ‘keeper Larrieu in the box, after discussions between Bent, Kuqi and Currie it was decided that Darren Currie should take as Tommy Miller had been taken off 10 minutes earlier, Currie stepped up and fired the ball high in the centre of the goal to give the 1400 or so travelling Ipswich fans something to cheer about.
Town had chances to double their advantage before the 85th minute when the actually did, Darren Currie tapping home Jim Magilton’s pass to make it 2-0 and almost certainly see the points making the long trip back to Suffolk.
However Plymouth had other ideas two minutes after Town seemingly had the
points on the coach home Mickey Evans pulled a goal back for the home side but
it was not enough to stop Town going on too win 2-1 and go 5 points clear at the
top of the championship table after Sunderland could only manage a draw against
lowly Gillingham and Reading lost at home to Derby and Wigan play today.
