Ipswich Town defender Jason De Vos has hit out at the way the big clubs in football today are spending yet the small clubs are fighting to survive.

De Vos: “Look at Chelsea, they have spent £150m on players in the last 18 months. That is enough to fund the Football League over the next 10 years and develop players in that time, give them the right facilities to progress.

“When you think about that money spent on players, it's a ludicrous situation. Spending £30m on just one player is insane.

“I don't begrudge the wages the players are paid at the top level. If someone is willing to pay that money to do a job, why should they turn it down?

“But football needs a reality check somewhere along the line. The game has changed and is just about money now and it's almost cannibalistic in a way.

“The big clubs are getting bigger and the ones at the bottom of the ladder are going to the wall, or near enough, every week.

“The direction the game is going in I find very sad. You are never going to see a Wimbledon situation again with a club going from the Fourth Division to the top in a short space of time.

“That is never going to happen anymore and that takes away the dream for so many football fans who support their hometown club. I find that very sad.”
