STB’s Match Report: QPR
Ipswich Town slipped to third in the championship after defeat against Queens Park Rangers earlier today.
Two defensive errors gave QPR what some may see as the easiest three points they are likely to get all season from one of the most unlikely places.
QPR’s first goal came after just 4 minutes, although it could have been earlier as there were calls for a QPR penalty after Paul Furlong looked to be shoved off the ball but the premiership referee Andy D’Urso gave Town a free kick which Kelvin Davis scuffed onto the back of Paul Furlong and the striker had the simple job of sliding the ball under Davis to make it 1-0.
The R’s could of maybe even should have been 2-0 up before half time when Furlong headed the ball into the net from a corner but the referee ruled the goal instead awarding Town another free kick after it appeared to him that Furlong had pushed a Town player.
Rangers were the better side during the first half with their imposing centre backs and 5-man midfield keeping the Town strikers pretty much quite during the first half although Darren Bent, Darren Currie and Tommy Miller did have a chance or so each to bring Town level before the half time break.
Town came out 5 minutes early for the second half, maybe some sort of motivational tactic by Joe Royle or maybe the clock in the home dressing at Portman Road is fast but if it was Joe Royle trying to motivate the team it didn’t work as QPR continued to boss the game maybe not to same extent as in the first half but bossing is still bossing.
The introduction of Pablo Couñago did cause the QPR defence a few problems maybe more than any of the other Town strikers used today bit he did give away the free kick that lead to QPR’s second when he brought down Lee Cook just outside the area, Rowlands free kick was headed home by Danny Shittu with 15 minutes remaining.
Couñago almost made up for his error from the re-start but failed to find a way past Royce in the QPR goal and it ended 2-0 to QPR, only a 3rd home defeat of the season sees Town slipped from top of the table last Friday to third today level on points with Sunderland and Wigan.
