Report: Town 1-2 Atletico

Ipswich Town slumped to their fourth defeat of pre-season after losing 2-1 against Spanish side Atletico Madrid last night.

Although Town played well the Spanish side had the extra class and depth in their squad to win the game, but 19 minutes in you could be forgiven for thinking Town could go on to win the game.

 

Ian Westlake got on the end of Dean McDonalds pass and slotted the ball past Madrid ‘keeper Leo Franco, Sam Parkin came close to making it 2-0 to Town Parkin sending his header from a Darren Currie Corner just.

 

Towns defence feel into old routines as on the stroke of half time Madrid equalised through Mateja Kezman who followed up Rodriguez blocked shot and fired home to make 1-1 going into the half time break.

 

Jim Magilton came close to restoring Town’s lead early in the second half when he sent a free-kick just over the Madrid bar.

 

Madrid took the lead with just over 25 minutes to play when some slack marking allowed Ibanez to head home from Ibagaza’s corner to make it 2-1 to Madrid.

 

That’s how it stayed for the rest of the evening, the sub 10,000 crowd may be able to take some positives with them going into Tuesday nights final friendly of summer, away at Colchester United.

Atletico Madrid: Leo Franco, Velasco (Molinero, 62), Lopez (Gonzalez, 72) Ibanez, Contra (Colsa, 62), Perea, Rodriguez (Ferenandez, 62), Arenas (Zahinos, 62), Baulio (Arizmendi, 62), Kezman, Petrov (Ibagaza, 62). Subs not used: Sicilia and Cuellar.
