Sheepy On Bent Call Up

Ipswich Town chairman David Sheepshanks has congratulated former Town striker Darren Bent upon receiving his first full England call up.

Bent received his first call-up to Sven-Goran Eriksson's side after Andy Johnson picked up a calf injury in Palace's game against Norwich and Alan Smith decided to stay in England and play for Manchester United's reserve team, Bent scored twice on his Charlton debut which combined with 8 England Under 21 goals helped Bent get the call up.

Mr Sheepshanks: “I'm sure I'm one of many associated with Ipswich Town that is delighted to see Darren involved with Sven Goran Eriksson's side, we watched him grow into the player he is at Portman Road and although his chance with England has come perhaps even quicker than Darren was expecting, it's a great thrill for him and a great opportunity.”

Mr Sheepshanks also confirmed that Town will benefit if Bent leaves Charlton for more than they paid or if he plays in a competitive England game, adding: “When Darren moved to Charlton we worked very hard to make sure the Club benefits if his career progresses, there is a considerable sell-on clause built into the deal should Darren move from Charlton for a fee higher than they paid for him.

“Also, if he plays in a 'competitive' international for England we will receive a substantial sum, both for a first game and a second one if it happens.”
