Report: Crewe 1-2 Town

Town made it three wins in a row with a 2-1 win against Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road last night.

The start of the game was a slow one, but it was Town who created the chances in the first ten minutes, Jason De Vos headed a Darren Currie free-kick over and Richard Naylor (starting the game up front) run the ball out of play.

It took the home side ten minutes to register their first attempt on goal, Luke Rodgers beating both Wilnis and De Vos on his way to shooting wide of Supple’s goal, two minutes later Steve Jones had an effort tipped round the up right.

Crewe then went and took the lead through Jones who simply poked home Rodgers’ low level cross after 15 minutes.

The home sides lead didn’t last very long, just four minutes later Alan Lee had hauled Town level when he headed home Matt Richards’ cross.

Crewe almost took the lead again soon after, Kenny Lunt’s free kick found its way to Richard Walker who only managed to fire over.

Alan Lee had to limp off injured on 34 minutes but his replacement Dean McDonald was more than a handful for the Crewe defence which had leaked 68 goals in 32 games before Town and Crewe and met. Jimmy Juan tried to add to the number of goals Crewe had conceded with another one of his trademark free kicks but it was tipped over by Turnball in the Crewe goal as the first half drew to a close.

Crewe again nearly regained the lead soon after the re-start, Jones again providing the threat to the scoreline when his volley flew over.

Fabian Wilnis had to leave the pitch with a rib injury with Jim Magilton coming on in his place.

Town took the lead after 53 minutes, Dean McDonald scored his first goal for Town when he latched onto Richards’ long cross before using his speed and skill to pass Otsemobor and curling the ball in off the post.

Crewe then went on the offensive, Foster nearly brought them level with two headers that Supple did well to stop and Taylor was also foiled by the young ‘keeper before Town created chances of their own with Juan and McDonald both going close to extending Town’s lead.

The win last night has moved Town up to 9th in the table just 7 points and goal difference off the play-offs.
