Report: Town 2-0 Leicester

Town continued their push for the play-offs with a 2-0 win against Leicester City at Portman Road earlier today.

Owen Garvan scored his second goal of the season to give Town the lead early in the second half and Ricardo Fuller marked his Town debut with the winner four minutes from time.

The visitors started the better side, Stephen Hughes testing Shane Supple with an effort just two minutes in and Iain Hume fired wide from 18 yards, sadly despite the promising start chances were at a premium.

Leicester’s numbers behind the ball prevented a scramble in the Leicester box turning into a Town goal after 10 minutes when Leicester ‘keeper Paul Henderson failed to punch a Currie free-kick clear of the danger zone.

The next chance of any significance came after 13 minutes when Johansson sent a Gudjonsson corner wide of the upright.

The game was a bit stop start in the first half with the referee pulling people up for fouls that he could have let go then letting people go who he should have pulled up and the play in the final third from both sides left a lot to be desired.

The first booking came after 23 minutes, Johansson handling the ball, perhaps Scott Barron, Owen Garvan, Richard Stearman and Danny Tiatto should also have been carded before half time.

Supple raced off his line to stop Fryatt after he broke through the Town defence and Richard Naylor headed off target for Town as the first half drew to a close.

The game livened up a bit after the re-start, Owen Garvan had a shot from 15 yards parried out by Henderson and at the other the end Supple pushed Maybury’s shot round the post.

The break through that some of the early play from the first half had suggested finally arrived just six minutes after the half time break, Darren Currie’s corner was not cleared the by the foxes defence and Garvan poked the ball home from 6 yards.

Matt Fryatt tried to level the scores soon after but fired wide, Danny Haynes almost doubled Town’s lead only for Henderson to rush off his line to smother the danger, Dean McDonald replaced Haynes soon after.

With 20 minutes to go Leicester made two changes with Elvis Hammond and Gareth Williams coming on for Danny Tiatto and Stephen Hughes.

Town did double their lead with 6 minutes to go, Fuller heading home Currie’s corner at the near post.

Hammond had an effort blocked as the game came to an end, Town are now just 5 points behind Preston who they face next weekend at Deepdale.
