The versatility of Middlesbrough-born Darren was a big attraction for Pools when signing him, as he is able to operate anywhere across the back four or in midfield.

He started his professional career with York City before being snapped up by Sunderland in 1996. An initial loan move to Cardiff City turned permanent in the summer of 2004 but new Bluebirds boss Dave Jones allowed him to leave after just one season and Pools were quick to swoop for his signature.

After a slow start to last season, Williams made the right-back slot his own for the majority of the season and he put in some very assured performances.
