Vital win as Pools find their home form

Mick Wadsworth says he and the Hartlepool United players have been getting the feeling that things are starting to come together for them after their erratic start to the League One season - and on the evidence of their 2-0 win over Peterborough United at Victoria Park, he could well be right.

This wasn’t just an ordinary win, it was a full deserved one against a side second top of League One before the kick-off.
From young keeper Jake Kean through a solid back four and a hard-working midfield to a tireless attack, Pools were full value for only their second home League win of the season.
It’s too early to get excited, but not too early to feel encouraged and hopeful.
The impressive Peter Hartley headed Pools in front a minute before half-time and a minute from the end of the second half Gary Liddle, who has switched to midfield from defence to accommodate him, steered in the second from the edge of the area.
Kean, who has extended his loan for another month and looks a keeper with great prospects, made a handful of brilliant saves. But it wasn’t a rearguard action – Pools gave as good as they got in an entertaining match spoiled slightly when Posh’s Lee Tomlin was sent off for a nasty late foul on Leon McSweeney.
Wadsworth, the caretaker manager-elect-in-waiting, or something like that, told the club website: “We had the feeling during the week that things were starting to come together for us.
“I think the changes at the back and moving Gary Liddle to midfield have paid off and made us a lot stronger.
“We were hanging on at times, but our keeper got our out of trouble a couple of times.
“It means a lot to the players and the fans and I thought the fans gave us terrific support.”
When the team gives 100 percent like they did in this game and boasts so many good individual performances as well, the support will be there, Mick.
The win has done Pools a power of good in the League table – they are seven points behind the top and six ahead of the bottom. And with games away games against Leyton Orient (second bottom) and Dagenham and Redbridge (fourth bottom) coming up before the end of the month, they have every chance to maintain their good away form.
But a win at home to Bristol Rovers between those games is probably just as vital.
Meanwhile, Pools have been drawn away to Sheffield Wednesday in the Northern quarter-final of the Johnstone’s Paints Trophy.
