Sweeney - new deal

There's more good news for Hartlepool United as leading scorer and double player-of-the-year winner Antony Sweeney has agreed toi sign a new contract at Victoria Park.

There were fears that Sweeney, who hit 14 goals last season from midfield, was being stalked by other clubs, but he has now agreed to extend his stay with the club and has signed a new deal, though details of the length of the new contract are not being released.

The chances are, however, that he has only signed on for one more year, which will be his tenth as a professional with Pools after making his debut in 2001.

Sweeney has always been a popular player with the fans, his end-to-end energy winning as many admirers as his obvious eye for a goal, and many will be looking forward to him forming a partnership with the veteran Nobby Solano next season.

Sweeney, from Stockton, and Solano, from faraway Peru, could make up a paring with a real international flavour, and there is even speculation that former Pools midfielder Tommy Miller, from Shotton, could be returning to his first club after being released by Sheffield Wednesday.
