Hartlepool United have never been the same team since Paul Murray left the midfield so let's hope the 38 year old has the same influence as the club's new manager ..

He certainly won't have to do anything to win over the fans who appreciated his skills, commitment and football intelligence as a player. He was the archetypal midfield general and, apart from Sir Ritchie Humphreys, we have not had anyone of his standard since.

Can he translate that into management? Well it's good that he has been given the chance at a club he knows and he is bringing in Willie Donachie as his No 2. One suspects that Willie be the hard man in the relationship, and if he can have the same effect as Craig Hignett then we start moving up the league.

Expect a new manager/first game reaction at Cambridge this week but, as Sam Collins discovered, the true test will come in December when everything has settled down.
