The 33rd minute volley from newboy Nathan Thomas's superb cross was enough to win the game despite the visitors throwing everything at the Pools defence in the final stages.

Winning the game was vital if we were to keep the blue touchpaper lit. Going out heroically against a Championship side in the FA Cup is one thing - toughing it out for a vital three league points was much harder.

We simply have to make our games in hand count and this win got us off to the best possible start.

Unfortunately, the chance to keep the momentum going at Accrington this Tuesday looks unlikely as their pitch is still frozen. On the plus side it does give the other newboy - Ellis Harison from Bristol City - a chance to get to know his new teammates.
