There's a growing sense of excitement among Poolies as the first game of the season looms at Billingham this weekend ..

Of course, every decent football follower feels the same about his club at this time of year, but Craig Hignett and Curtis Fleming are giving us reasons to be confident.

Their activities on the transfer market have been intelligent and successful - doubtless as much to do with backing from the chairman as much as theirr undoubted charm.

They've gone for players who still have something to prove in the game and who have had other offers. Grimsby fans are well and truly cheesed off that we have taken goalscorer Padraig Amond and defender Toto Nsiala. These two were stand-out performers as the Mariners returned to the football league and it must have taken something big to get them to move to Pools.

Similarly midfielder Nicky Deverdics and forward Lewis Alessandra were wanted by others.

It's also good news that SAcott Harrison has not been completely jettisoned and is training at Maiden Castle. He was tremendous the season before last and if he gets a new contract he may just well be the best "signing" of the summer.
