Hartlepool United offer contracts to four more

Hot on the heels of the announcements about Tommy Widdrington and Brian Ross, Hartlepool United announced that new contracts have been offered to Jon Bass, Paul Smith, Paul Arnison and Mark Robinson.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? The answer, as with the departure of Widds, is "It depends". Of the four, only Robinson has really been a regular over the last twelve months, although admittedly Smith has suffered a lot with injuries.

Bass and Arnison have both found themselves on the fringes of the first team, with Barron the man in possession of the right back spot. Both have blown hot and cold somewhat when called upon to fill the position, though Bass in particular might think himself unfortunate not to have played more games.

The situation with these two players though may indicate something else: the status of Graeme Lee. At the moment Spike has yet to sign a new contract - although it's believed an offer has been made - and should he leave, as many are thinking, Barron may well be moved back into the centre of defence. Bass can also play in the centre, and Arnison has also played in midfield. If the club believe Lee is going, it makes more sense to sign up both Bass and Arno.

Robinson getting a new deal is not a surprise; he's been a regular now for a couple of seasons. But Paul Smith is another matter altogether. There's no doubt he's got the talent - and he played a huge part in our run to the Playoffs last season, having a hand in over 30 goals. But the knee injury he suffered in pre-season and other niggling problems since have limited his opportunities; and in the meantime Ritchie Humphreys has looked exceptional in his favoured left wing position.

At the moment though we can't say for certain that any of the four will be with us next season; but with deals being offered, Newell must think that they are capable of competing in Division 2. Only time will tell whether he is correct.
