Hartlepool United have confirmed that Australian striker Joel Porter had keyhole surgery on his knee at the end of last week. It looks like he won't be out of action for long though - and Pools have plenty of cover.

Rumours had been circulating that Porter had had a minor op towards the end of last week, and it's now been confirmed that last season's Player of the Year has had keyhole surgery on his knee to sort out a cartilage problem.

The good news is that the operation seems to have been a success, and he won't be out too long - three to four weeks is what the club is saying. However that does mean that he might have to sit out the opening games, as four weeks takes us to the verge of the new season and he's likely to be short on match practice.

While there's no doubt that a fit Joel Porter is the preferred partner for Adam Boyd, Pools now look to have strength in depth and should be able to overcome his absence. Jon Daly showed signs of promise towards the end of last season, Eifion Williams is still a decent striker given the chance, and we now of course also have Chris Llewellyn who can play up front and may provide even more opportunities for the prolific Boyd.
