Former World Champion Damon Hill has revealed that he believes Michael Schumacher should retire soon before it's too late. Hill admits that he retired too late and that Schumacher should not make the same mistake he did. This is what Hill had to say about Michael's future:
""Michael was always much fitter than any other driver and, physically, he could be competitive for a good number of years yet. But I think the psychological effect is much more of an influence. What is it like now to be the oldest driver in the series and to have a younger driver chasing and challenging him? After I gave up I was asked to interview Michael and he said that he would know when the time came to retire. His dad had always told him that when a younger guy comes along and starts beating you then that is the time to retire. So if Michael wants reminding...
I ended up driving for Jordan where I won another Grand Prix and the time wasn't right to retire. I started my last season in 1999 with the full intention of getting more race wins but it just wasn't to be and then it was right to stop. Michael is different, I wouldn't apply what I know about myself to somebody else and particularly not to him."
Damon was certainly careful to point out that Michael is different than himself and should base what he does on what Damon did, however the main point is still highly relevant. Schumacher should retire at the top. If Michael wins the World Championship this season then he should indeed retire, at the top where he whould be. If he doesn't win, perhaps one more season is in order to retake his crown. By then, whether he has or has not take his 8th title, Schumacher should retire, or face further dissapointments.
