Ferrari Hurt By Flexi Wing Ban?

Dale Calkins

Ferrari is rather slow this weekend and it has been suggested that perhaps the new ban on flexi wings is to blame. FIA Technical Delegate Charlie Whiting however does not believe that his rule change should cost any team anything at all. Whiting had this to say about the clamp down on flexi wings:

"It won't make a big difference."

The rule change was believed to be prompted by a dossier to the FIA by the Renault team with evidence that Ferrari was indeed using a flexing rear wing element. The evidence apparently showed that Ferrari's engine revs increased by about 200 on the front straight for no explainable reason other than the use of a flexi wing. Ferrari's Technical Director Ross Brawn countered talk of Ferrari being hurt by this new rule by stating that other teams are cheating:

"I'm already hearing stories about people having flexible skins on the rear wings. The skin can suck down and change the profile of the wing. So it doesn't stop."

Hopefully for Ferrari, this new rule will not affect the car to much but their pace certainly suggests that the team was previously using a flexible rear wing.
