Wanderers midfielder started for France in their shock 1-0 defeat against outsiders Senegal in the opening game of the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea.

The game was played in Seoul, the Korean capital city.
Djorkaeff started the game as a replacement for the inspirational but injured Real Madrid midfielder Zinedine Zidane. However, Djorkaeff was substituted halfway through the second half in favour of striker Christophe Dugarry.
Senegal, making their World Cup debut, scored the winner midway through the first half when a defensive mix up between Chelsea's Emmanuel Petit and Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez allowed Pape Bouba Diop to nip in and give his country a deserved shock victory of the World Cup holders and favourites.
