Recruited from Hermes Juniors in 1995, Gavin initially appeared to be on his way out of Dens under John McCormack and was only hours away from being transferred to Brechin City.
However, luckily for the club it was Cowboy shown the door and not Gav.
For the remainder of that season his future was again initially in doubt under Jocky Scott, when he started only two games as the Dark Blues won promotion to the SPL but put in countless hours of extra work to force himself into contention for a first team place, and once given the chance performed superbly.
Scotland manager Craig Brown called up Gavin to the full squad and awarded him his first cap in April 2001.
In winnng his cap he became the first player capped at Dens since Bobby Connor in 1986.
Almost an ever present in the side under Ivano during the last 2 seasons.
Ivano Bonetti has already praised Gavin and assured him that he is part of his long term plans and has tipped him as good enough to win a big money move to Serie A in the future.
Opened this season with a goal against the Arabs at Tannadice, and has scored some memorable goals in the last couple of years, including a winner at Ibrox deep into injury time.
