Beto Carranza first burst on to the Argentinian football scene as a youngster with Racing Club.
He was viewed as a future star for club and country with his lethal combination of skill and speed. Racing scouts felt he was a better prospect than Claudio Lopez (ex Racing and Valencia now of Lazio). He was comfortable either as a midfielder or striker but prefers the role of withdrawn striker.
He made his first team debut for Racing in 1991 in a 3-1 loss to Union Santa Fe. Within a year he had moved to Argentina's most popular club Boca Juniors.
Carranza went on to play for another 2 of Argentinas biggest clubs, Independiente and San Lorenzo . In short he has played for all of the big teams in Argentina except River Plate.
He was picked for the national team by both Alfio Basile and Daniel Passarella (nine caps). He has 2 nicknames: "Betito" =Little Beto - he was always frail and skinny, and "Trapito" best translates as "scruffy" - he used to have long hair.
Injury curtailed his career and he resumed in Peru and then on to Dundee where both himself and Ivano have said that he is only approaching 80% fitness.
Scored a spectacular free kick in his first start at Tyncastle.
Creative and inspirational Argentinian international.
Beto signed for Dundee the same week as Claudio Caniggia.
Has the crowd on the edge of their seats whenever he has the ball and bewitches defenders at will with his dribbling skils.
His international career was put on hold when he picked up a serious knee injury, when being touted as the New Maradonna, which put him out of the game for nearly two years.
Resuming his career in Peru, where he scored the South American goal of the year in 99/00.
Signed a new long term deal at Dens in 2001.
