The Falcons failed to give their fans a late Christmas present in Stockport yesterday, going down 27-19 to Sale thanks to two sloppy lapses allowing the hosts to score their tries, while Nick Macleod's boot secured the home victory.
Returning to the Premiership for the first time since the tighter-than-tight 26-25 win over Gloucester at the start of December, Newcastle would have been, if not confident, then at least hopeful of three wins from the festive programme.
Jimmy Gopperth was restored to fly-half and Rob Vickers made his first start since September, having recovered from injury. Taiasina Tu'ifua was in the back row with Will Welch and Ally Hogg, Tim Swinson partnering James Hudson in the second row. Despite playing in Toulon last weekend, Luke Fielden was nowhere to be seen as Luke Eves and Suka Hufanga took the wingers' shirts.
Rob Miller, once of the North East, was full-back for the North West's team, the 2005/06 Premiership champions in case you'd forgotten (or haven't seen the relevant massive signs at Edgeley Park recently).
The Falcons lost Corne Uys early on to injury, and Jeremy Manning came on as a winger, pushing Eves into the centre. The late call-up of Andrew van der Heijden onto the bench for Tom Catterick meant our loose backs on the bench were now used up.
Good thing we didn't find ourselves 16-0 down in the first half. What's that? Oh, right. So with less than 10 minutes gone Tom Brady broke from his own half and the Falcons failed to close him down, allowing an easy try. You'd never imagine the same thing happened when we played Gloucester.
Macleod followed up his conversion with a monster penalty from within his own half, and then kicked another two.
The Falcons finally found their feet and James Fitzpatrick dropped a pass with the line tantalisingly close. We put together a good spell of possession but when Sale conceded a penalty, Gopperth was instructed to take the points.
A try by Manning from a run down the far right and the resulting conversion got us back into the game at half-time, 19-10 down, though it could have been better had Gopperth not missed with a long-range penalty.
Gopperth knocked over two penalties in the second period but on the hour confusion at the base of a wheeling scrum just inside the Sale half of the pitch saw Mark Cueto break and outpace Eves to score a deflating try.
Still, even at 24-16, there was optimism among the away fans that the Falcons could pull it off. Gopperth kicked another penalty, taking us back into range of a bonus point, but Macleod answered within seconds. His fifth penalty and a knock-on in the dying minutes left us with nothing from an almighty effort in an exciting match.
So now we all become Leicester fans for the day. And dare not lose to Northampton on Saturday.

You only have to look at our huge points difference to all other clubs to realise how many tries we have conceded to errors and sloppy defending.A win against Saints is not impossible but highly unlikely.I will miss the next two games as I booked a winter cruise and only realised afterwards that I missed two home games and not one however if points are not taken in those two games relegation will be almost a certainty.Yesterday a Sale was a massive disappointment after a dreadful start as usual and then a fight back to within sight of a possible win to throw it all away again.

I cannot believe that a 140 mile drive down the motorway in the superb coach they use had any effect at all.All amenities are on board and you can move about and use the toilet facilities at will.Watched the game live but watching the highlights on tv made the 2 tries look even worse.These slow starts and lapses of concentration leading to mistake after mistake have been ongoing all season thats why our points against is double the next worst in the league.Plenty good stuff on monday but overshadowed again by the poor bits.

I agree with Touchy, I think that travelling the day of the game does make a difference, it's not part of the usual pre match routine for away games and getting things such at pre match meals etc right must be difficult and travelling by coach does lead to lethargy which takes time to shake off.
There is a reason why teams don't do it and on Boxing Day we found out why to our cost. The first 20 min lost us the game, from then on we were very much in the game.

We have conceded early at home and away despite early travel the travel on the day had IMO absolutely nothing to do with the awful start as its a deficiency thats shown all season.

Completely agree Pityackerour points difference in line with our league points and position say it all. Tait now blames players!! Who signed these players and repeatedly selects them to justify signing them ? Inside backs 9/10 create nothing, no space opportunity for outside backs. Jordi & Goosen simply dont tackle same every game they have played watch the games so we concede soft tries Was at game and tries were even worse on TV also watched other games played, Bath are very poor but beat us comfortably at KP first game of season. We struggled and were lucky to get draw Worcester. This is Taits Team and it is some way worse than last seasons the results are proof.

The pack is better than last season, but Tait hasn't signed one really top class back and the Falcons don't have the attack coaching to make the best of their limited resources behind the scrum.

Good Point Alas, but MY was a threat until Tait reigned him in and messed him about result he leaves. Manning at 15 or 12. Give young Hodgson 25mins at 9 or 10. Pasqualin Chudley Uyls Hellier Shortland Sherriffe all brought in no other AP club would sign them. Goosen tried at 10 when he himself says he is not a 10. No direction / leadership.

We seem to have a knack of inhibiting players,Look at Miller now at Sale he is a different player look at his stats.Certain of our backs cant or wont tackle no names anyone that was at Sale could not miss it?? Travelling on day makes no difference,have you seen the coach its a mobile palace, we generally start slow at home what causes that the journey to ground ?? The players are playing under presure and seem to have no belief is as if they are scared to make a mistake.Time for a change.

I've only watched the highlights but the Cueto try seems to be the game clincher. Our scrum was dominating the Sale pack and we were in a great attacking position. Hogg is controlling the ball quite well until he takes a very heavy touch and the ball travels through the length of the scrum untouched and appears at Powell's feet. They score as we're set for attack and it's game over.
Obviously we weren't great but if we score at that point instead of them, we go on to win.

as a sale fan thought your team competed well and deserved, at the very least, a losing bonus point and could have well won the game if cueto hadn't scored completely against the run of play.
what did seem obvious was that you didn't seem to have a clear gameplan until we were 16-0 up and you started being more direct targetting the fringes around the ruck where we have been consistently poor this season.

Was at the Sale game and IMHO both teams were not great, we simply made more mistakes than them, there seems to be no self-belief in the team they are all on edge and don’t appear to want to stick their heads above the trench for fear of failing. This is a vicious circle that the coaching staff must resolve if we are to have any chance of staying up, I still believe the players we have are good enough.
Also I think a big part of the problem is the style of play we are forced to play with Jimmy at 10, I know that he is one of the best in the league but I don’t think it is playing to our strengths; I would like to see a 9, 10, 12 of Pilgrim, Manning and Gopperth. Nothing else is working so why not???

I actually disagree brady12, I think that the way we play actually isnt playing to Gopperths strengths and that the kicking style is being forced on him by the tactics set out by the coaches. I may be completely wrong but anyone that followed his career in NZ will know he is NOT a kicking fly half, this is a style that has only been adopted since his time with the Falcons, I have also heard that if Gopperth moves on at the end of the season (which i dont think is as much of a certainty as some people may think) he is keen to play somewhere that exploits his running game more and is not short of teams offering him just that.Not sure how reliable my source is on that one but it certainly wouldnt suprise me. Having said that, after making the trip to Harlequins and Sale and attending the home games, if we want to adopt a running style it would definately help to have backs outside of Gopperth that are capable of catching the ball when the try line is right in front of them. We have created opportunity after opportunity to score tries this year only for a ball to be dropped or a poor last final pass, therefore the lack of quality finishing has been a major issue for me this season not the lack of opportunities ceated.

Prezza, I never followed him before he came to us but he is undoubtedly a quality player, I was just thinking of a quick fix because it looks like the coaching staff is staying put. I thought manning played well at sale and he looked hungry for the ball, cant believe he isn’t played more. My feelings on pasqualy are that he is simply not our best choice at 9 and I still think that Jimmy is needed in the team, he is strong enough for 12, he can tackle and unlike other 12's at our disposal he can catch a ball.

have to agree to disagree with you sour. While im not saying every pass from Gopperth has been bang on, the majority of the dropped ball I have seen has been out n out dropped ball that should have been taken, including the one on boxing day. Dont get more wrong, I think hes a very gifted player and very good at what he does even if it is a bit one dimensional, but there is no doubt in my mind that ball handling will be one of his 'work ons' and its not just the balls from Gopperth that hes dropped. I think hes actually better taking the ball when running on an angle, but when hes running straight on he does seem to struggle.

Too many wingers just sit out there waiting for the ball to come to them but Manning and Suka constantly looked for work on Monday and it was really refreshing to watch.

This thread defies belief! Jimmy Gopperth has carried this team on his back for some time now, playing though injury, banging the goals over. He is the only class act in the squad, hence the agents sniffing around at start of January, and who could blame them? He has NO decent service from his 9s for some time and for "sour" to say he needs to learn to give a pop pass says more about sour's knowledge of thr game than anything else.

I've made my views on jimmy known a few times. His presence IMO is a hindrance at times. But that one on boxing day was horrific and I had a delightful view of it from the printerland stand - did it even make the highlights? I don't recall seeing it.
I stand by what I said regarding jimmy. But I shall rephrase it - he needs to learn how to deliver a pop pass. He's far too aggressive with the ball in offload situations.
I suppose ninjaboy you think that Northampton's front row earns evey penalty they get and don't just push for the first two then stand up....

I had a good view of it too right in front of where it happened and IMO that ball should have been taken. Sour its not like dropping the ball is an uncommon occurence where Fitzy is concerned and is something that has been highlighted by other people. Like i said he has massive potential but ball handling must be a 'work on'

It's pretty general at the moment. There's always been lots of debate and vast differences in opinions but that is the point of a message board.
Currently though, the 'discussion' (if you can call it that) is straight off the playground. As is the spelling, grammar, language and vocabulary.

@sours. Picture the scene. 2 x professional rugby packs scrum down, men who are especially trained for this purpose. 1 of them shunts the whole thing forward to the extent that the entire opposition pack is in retreat. The front rows then come up.
Are you really suggesting that the referee rewards the weaker side by resetting the scrum, or should he not penalise them for their poor technique at not being able to contain the opposition?
Northampton's pack (not just their front row) probably do merit most of their scrum penalties. It is up to the opposition to resist them.

@Daveyb. Please do not be so rude. I played many games in the front row (tight head) and have refereed hundreds of games. Your assumptions on my ability to make comment are therefore unfounded. I can assure you there are also very few top level refs who have never played, although that view may serve to justify your confusion over the decisions they make.

If the opposition are going backwards they can either collapse (dangerous to them and clearly penaliseable)' or take a chance and stand up, which will probably result in a penalty but be a safer option in terms of personable wellbeing. Again, if the opposition front row cannot contain this power, then that is their problem.

@Ninjaaboy.........I was not being rude. I was not makjng assumptions about whether or not you had played front row. I merely said that unless you had played front row, as most refs at Prem level have not, since their build is not ideal for trecking around the park, then even with schoolroom tyraining they have little or no idea as to what is going on. this leads them to make assumptions, sometimes based on a small amount of knowledge. All teams see this at all levels week after week.
I am afraid that we will have to disagree with your view on the Saints front row. It is quite easy to pop out or stand up when going forward, because if your body angle is not right, and that goes for the power coming through from the second row as well, then you have little choice. A prop pushing straight, onto another prop can become a fascinating encounter, but all to often the dark arts take over and the guessing begins.

Surely that is the point; There is no such thing as the dark arts, you either push straight against some one else or everything is cheating?
I agree front row encounters are fascinating and add an extra dimension to the game we all love but players are savvy and will look to exploit are opportunity they can. In the close and secretive environment of a scrum and particularly front row is easy to manipulate.

Yes, the dark arts is cheating, but no more so than any other offence comitted on the park in the spirit of the name of the game. App players play refs as best they can to obtain an advantage, its part of thegame. But, in the front row, if you really do not know or understnd the offence, then how cn you pss sentence.
Week after week you hear commentators say just that, here we go, teaam a's turn for a penalty this time etc etc. It ruins the game and can have enormous consequences in this comercial environment in which we live.
Which is why thee need for more 4th official aid should be sought.
Think back to the days where you could not be arrested if a policeman was not wearing his helmet......whats that got to do with whether or not yuou have comitted a crime?
Look at the free kick tiote gave away to give Liverpool their second. Replays quite clearly suggest he was very hard done to, as were Sunderland.....but we have to live with it. You can only play within the prescribed rules.
