Newcastle Falcons are at home this week for only the second game of 2020 at home and they welcome Ampthill RFC.

Brett Connon makes his first start of the season for Newcastle Falcons on Sunday. The fly-half’s inclusion comes as one of six changes from the side which defeated Nottingham last Friday, the league-leading Falcons having won their last 16 games in all competitions. Ampthill have announce that Welsh U20s and Sevens International, Tomi Lewis has joined Ampthill on loan from Scarlets for the remainder of the season. He has come through the Scarlets development programme and represented Wales U20s at the World Cup in 2019 and Wales in the IRB Sevens scoring 16 tries! He joins Ampthill from Scarlets where he made 2 appearances this season in the Guinness PRO14.
Ampthill the club runs six Senior teams plus the full range of Junior sides. as of the 2019-20 season, the first XV play in the RFU Championship. They have won against Hartpury, Bedford, Coventry, Doncaster and of course Yorkshire Carnegie. Plus a close Match against Jersey Reds 38-47.

Glad to see Common get a game, as he is well overdue a chance to prove himself.
As I have said elsewhere, I believe that Brett is the best 10, we have at the club and should have been our starting fly half at the start of the campaign.

I see Ampthill have a few we’ll known veterans in their pack 3 of them being Maama Molitika aged 45 , Shane Tongauiha aged 38 and the youngster Dave Ward aged 34 all very good players in their pomp.

Obonna played today against the Bulls. We will be paying substantially more cash for Owen then Obonna so we may as well use him. Rotation is good and giving youngsters a chance but too much rotation can also be negative too.

Ah i agree..i dont actually like too much rotation. But i just think certain opportunities need to be taken in this league.

Greg Peterson (USA international) has looked really good and I think is our best signing for this season. Van der Walt and Vuna have only played one game each, I think, so hardly anything to base an opinion on. Considering we’re 17 games into the season they don’t look like great value at this point (although we had the same problem with Ah You last season).
Darren Barry is pretty steady as is Seb de Chaves, although the lineout hasn’t always worked with those guys playing. Robinson and Peterson in the second row is definitely our no1 partnership.
Gareth Owen has had a few games and looks solid although unremarkable. Wacokecoke and Stevenson have had lots of chances this season and to be honest are looking like exceptional home-grown talent.

First half one of the best we’d played all season. Playing with a much better pace with Connon at 10, great physicality. At half time I thought this could be 70+ points.
Then 2nd half we came out, seemed to forget all our tactics from the first half , randomly threw subs on and looked terrible. Why take Connon off? He was playing well, hasn’t played much this season so too much game time shouldn’t be an issue.

Agreed, we just seemed to fizzle out somehow in the second half. Some of Ampthill's tries came more from our mistakes than their own play, but, they capitalised well and never gave up; I ended up quite chuffed for them by the finish.
Wasn't impressed with the ref at all, though.

I was wondering what I was watching in the first half , pace power great handling and nice tries something that has been missing from most games this season and it was a delight to watch but the second half was probably the worst half of the season but another 5 points and I’m sure the players will be more critical of that second half than the fans.

We then, for some reason stopped doing the basics. However, fair play to Ampthill as they punished us for it.

The last half hour was painful to watch, not helped by the referee losing the plot completely, which I thought was going to end up in the game's biggest ever fight at one point. Definitely one to forget, but at the end of it we are 11 points clear at the top of the table and remain unbeaten this season. I somehow doubt that this record will continue however, they look pig sick of playing these games and we are only half way through.

And for core group of the team it is down to them that we are in the Champ so don’t have that much sympathy for them but can understand challenges mentally in this league.
Hogan mentioned something on twitter tonight that on average promoted teams lose between 1-5 games during the season. How many did Irish lose last year?
Think it puts things in perspective our league position and 100% record and that it’s not all doom and gloom. Will it hold? Be interesting to see. But let’s not sugar coat today , first half probably the best rugby we’ve seen in a while and second half quite clearly the worst we’ve seen..... and there’s been some bad rugby ....

Barry, to answer your question. After ten rounds (ie before today) Irish had lost one more game than us and had two fewer points than us. Bristol lost one game the year they went up. Last team to do it unbeaten was Saints in 2008.

I think that stat actually shows the graft the boys are putting in. And in comparison to those teams previous ..... we are actually doing well! It would be some achievement if we manage it , a true insight into the teams determination. Long way off yet but let’s keep behind the boys!

I had the ref link on and I didn’t think the ref lost the plot at all.
Our number 7 was getting very frustrated and has been like this for a few games now. He’s not handling the referee very well and has started to bark at them rather than chat to them the way he did when captain.
I liked how the referee was very good at saying hands down to the players at flash points. He was very much in their faces telling them they would be in bother if they escalated the flash points.
We could have scored 80 points today if we had played better in the second half but we didn’t and let them score 30 ish points.
That second half was down to us and not the ref.
I still don’t understand why we took Connon off. He kicked well, ran well, passed it into hands and put people into spaces rather than into contact.
The game changed for the worse around the 50 minute mark.
I put the blame squarely on the players who switched off and management who then didn’t get the message back onto the team
The ref was very good at warning the players and at one point in the first half he told Michael Young that he didn’t want to see our players go off feet even tho Ampthill were not really committing to the rucks. Two rucks later our prop is yellow carded.

Cheers Aidan, should have put my reflink thingy on too I suppose.
I know that they can't do a lot in terms of playing to prepare for next season, but by crikey they could work on keeping their focus on winning, not getting wound up by the ref or the opposition, and sorting their discipline.

I really like the way Wacokecoke carrries the ball in both hands and gets the ball away in a tackle. I still think when we make midfield breaks there needs to be more close support to keep the move alive.
Smashing 1st half, very disjointed 2nd half, I don't think all the subs helped and I was surprised Connon didn't get 80 minutes.

And also ,instead of faffing about on your own line and allowing the Ampthill lock to prove a better finisher than Stuart Hogg with an open tryline ahead of him, kick it long and chase hard. Gives everyone a chance to reorganise and get some room to move.

I think it was the Amphhill 1st try in the second half, a lineout near the south stand, the referee stops play before the ball is thrown in and warns the falcons about something. On resuming play the lineout is set again, referee gives a penalty against us, taken quickly and they score.
I take it that we ignored the referees warning and committed the same offence?
This 7 points and the interception pass in our 22 we were guilty of shooting ourselves in the foot at times.

Having watched us KO and not make 8 metres at the start ,we are then put under immediate pressure in our own half for a good 5 mins. I put that down to nerves on Connons behalf, but tbh his kicking to touch from penalties was so conservative we barely made 15 metres at times.
He did score a nice try .
MOM? Really?
IMO Joel has to start .His kicking game is better than both Connon and Flood and his general all round game is fluent and provides good quick ball .Also his tackling has improved .
I thought the backs were poor .Devoid of ideas at times ,most of the line breaks we made were from the forwards ,who all played well.
If we lose Welch ,Wilson or Graham next year to injury then its going to be a long hard season in the Premiership.
Alex Tait is another who should be starting if fit.

Joel was poor at Headingley and didn't impress yesterday. Just drifted wide unlike the first half when Connon took the ball to the line effectively aided by some powerful direct support running.

There were 2 elements to it.
He asked the Falcons to come up to the line and maintain the gap
He also asked our Hooker to step to his right and into the gap.
They didn’t
So he stopped play and told them to do it.
They didn’t so he penalised us for it.
The ref and touch judges were excellent in their communications all game both between themselves and what they were telling the players.

Sorry, I know this is a bit off topic and it’s honestly not a moan about youngsters getting a game! Was reading something at work when on my lunch about our promising youngsters (of which there’s a lot) and Josh Basham was mentioned.
I remember when he signed him it was quite a coup and LIrish supports weren’t over pleased however I don’t recall seeing his name this season. Is he completing his studies this season? Just wondering.

It’s all about individual management and nurturing where the younger players are concerned for me.
The management see them day in day out and I’m sure that they will introduce them to some game time as they feel appropriate when they are ready.
