Team news: Wingers return to face Irish
By Aidan
May 7 2021
Wingers Adam Radwan and Ben Stevenson return for Newcastle Falcons on Saturday when they host London Irish in Gallagher Premiership action. Radwan, who has scored 32 tries in his 42 appearances for the club, is back to full fitness having been out with a knee injury picked up during the 25-22 home win over Harlequins in February. Stevenson, who has scored three Premiership tries this season, returns after missing the trip to Gloucester two weeks ago, forming part of a side showing four changes from the Kingsholm clash.

Captain Mark Wilson is back to lead a starting XV which includes nine academy graduates, while Springbok cap Louis Schreuder comes in at scrum-half.
Barnstorming back-rower Carl Fearns could be set for his Falcons debut having been named on the bench for the 3pm kick-off at Kingston Park Stadium, with fly-half Joel Hodgson returning to the match-day 23.
Keen to end the campaign strongly as they enter the last five rounds of league action, director of rugby Dean Richards said: “We had a great start to the season but we’ve been hampered by things like Covid and injuries, and we just want to end on a high.
“We’ve taken the opportunity to blood some of our youngsters, which will be good in the long run, and we’re going to use these last five games in a really positive way.”
Having led at Gloucester last time out only to be hit by a second-half comeback, the Falcons boss said: “We always talk about consistency, and that’s what you aim for.
“At Gloucester we played really well for just over half an hour but dropped off afterwards – a lot of it due to injuries in key positions and a pretty strong wind, in fairness.
“We’ve tried to freshen the boys up a bit, because they were pretty jaded and tired after the Gloucester game. They’ve had time to recuperate, they’ve come back fresh and we’re all just looking forward to the London Irish game now.”
Newcastle lost an entertaining game 31-22 when the two teams met in Brentford in January, Richards saying: “When we played London Irish earlier in the season I said with the squad they’ve got and the outlay they’ve made – they’re a serious top-four contender.
“They’ve bought a huge amount of experience, and when we played them down there they had the most international caps out of any forward pack to have played in the Premiership.
“They’re a good side, but if we go out there and put out the performance we’ve prepared for it’ll be a great game.”

Ah You disappeared again.
I haven't?
Glad to see two established international centres.
Glad to see a top quality back row both starting and on the bench.
I really feel desperate for the boys to get a win and help the confidence return.

Great to see Adam back and Fearns in, slightly disappointed with no Ah You even on the bench.
He went off injured again v GLos didnt he?
If his contract is up in the summer we might not see him in a Falcons shirt again.
Always remember the Ulster fans...they all said theres one hell of a rugby player in there, but you'll rarely see it. They were pretty much spot on.
Hope we give it a go.

Probably not worth dredging up the paddy Jackson chat. Plenty of people, me included, wouldn’t pay ticket money to the club if he was playing. (Others wouldn’t have a problem and that’s their choice, but it’s a topic that tends to polarise).
I was purely talking from a rugby perspective. Nothing more.

I was thinking - oh dear the polar Jackson argument will start again.
A lot of power and pace on the ball.
It makes such a difference
Backs still woeful. Radwan has had a couple nice runs, otherwise they’ve done nothing. We just don’t have an attacking structure.
Narrow defence getting exposed again. Both tries against us really poor. When will we learn?
If their fullbacks nickname isn’t Dolly then there is a massive problem with L Irish

Week after week awful narrow defending leaving wide open spaces if this is Easters method it's not working.
The fact that every week now it gets exposed and we never change anything about it sums up this coaching staff. It’s blindly persist with the same@#$%&every week.

By the high tackle framework, how the hell was that not a red?
Haha my exact thoughts!
So because Orlando has got a steel chin and kept going it’s just a yellow. I’m truly confused by that call.
But what frustrates me more is on half way, up a man, we were choosing to box kick.
We can all shut up now 😂😂😂

Amazing what happens when you have players taking the ball at pace running at the gaps between the defenders....
Don’t recognise this team. Great stuff!

Nahhhh I think he’s found his calling on the wing. He has pace , power , he’s got the height for being good in the air and developing great instinct of the defenders and touch line.

Hes very good there...I just think when you have Ward, Passman and Carreras coming through Stevenson's all round game will be great at 13...
Pace , and energy and aggression...
When we can play like we have in the 2nd half against quality opposition, why do we produce the bilge we sometimes play!!!

But at the moment he’s better winger than all those so why would you move him out? He could do a job at 13 but you’d keep him in the wing. Just like goneva never really played 13 for us even though his game suited there he was our best winger.

We’ve found a class winger in Stevenson. Let him hone his craft and become even better. You don’t change around your best players in their best positions.

Yes but you also look forward and plan accordingly....
Nice position to be in.
At least the wingers actually saw the ball in space today...

I do see what you mean.
But take Bobby vickerw for instance. After him smashing the loose head side would have been crazy to put him back hooker.
Tom Penny perhaps less crazy at putting him at 13 now but he’s found his place at 15 most would say.
Thought today the lads played well. Was like Gloucester first half but better. They didn’t let irish dominate. Forwards were good , backs still a bit clunky in moving the ball but it’s getting better.

2nd half a complete team performance. Intensity, power, offloads. What a difference. Thought the starting back row + Fearns were immense. Radwan, Stevenson and Penny are electric.
And if he played for another club McGuigan would be in England conversation.

McGuigan is easy one of the best hookers in England.
Penny always played well at centre, he just couldn’t stay on the pitch long enough. His time at fullback has proved his quality as a player and finally proved his durability as a power / contact athlete.
Your right on the above but Stevenson is a 13...and he played there all last season...and was excellent with Wakecoke at 12.
Anyway...lets just enjoy that performance
So ...... if we ignore some poor defending, we can all enjoy our beer tonight. Bug shout out to Brett Connan , great kicking display. Fingers crossed we can keep it going next Monday.
FALCONS FALCONS.
I was just finally glad we had players running on to the ball at pace..into space. Thats all I've asked for all season...finally we get it...
McGuigan and Stevenson as bolsters for the Lions, or more likely the England summer tour assuming there is one of course.

Mcguigan is a Saxon from years ago...he could very well make the summer squad aswell.

I take back everything I've written, spoken and thought about the Falcons this season. One game changes it all.
Ha ha....
Nope it simply raises the questions why we haven't try to play more like that earlier in the season...
George Mcguigan, class act.
McGuigan, Chick, Penny, Davison, Robinson nest of the season....
But I was seeing a lot of Schreuder and Chick.
Just wonder if they might've been different calls if relegation was still a possibility

I was fearful heading into the game that Irish would do the same to us as they did down at their place earlier on in the season and to be fair, the way they switched play to score early on I was thinking it was just going to be a repeat but for once the Falcons really showed up.
I think the thing that impressed me the most was the intensity and aggression shown even during the first half and I think Schreuder was a big part of that. Getting to the breakdown quick, looking to move the ball before they had reset in defence, not looking to box straight away etc. Definitely his best game for us yet.
Yes they still gave plenty of penalties away, but they didn't compound them with stupid ones and the aggression in defence made up for it. I think to support this with evidence, was how our defence kept Tuisue (their best player IMO) quiet throughout. I think Burrell and Wilson deserve most of the praise for that, given he was looking to charge through the 10 channel.
Plenty of other positives like Connon's kicking, the unassuming Davison and the additional backrower in Mcguigan to point a few out. However I was particularly impressed by Fearns on his debut. Two turnovers, strong carrying and plenty of offloads even though he hasn't played for a year or so. What a signing he could be!
He singing highlights to me just how much attitude to the team game makes us what we are.
Roll on next week !
Also Connon was on form especially with the boot. He could have taken another 8 kicks and I don’t think the lad would have missed. Hitting it very sweetly yesterday.
Not so fussed about the penalty count tbh. Team going full throttle like that we’re gonna give them away. Sometimes I think some people expect to go through a game with very little penalties , lads pushing to the edge and the boundaries there will be pens albeit we sometimes guilty of giving away very silly ones.
As few have mentioned above question now is consistency? Can we take this into our next game? I hope so!
Must admit that I don't know all of the rules but from the puzzled expressions on the players, they were bemused as to some of the decisions against them.

I wish that I had recorded the game because didn't enjoy it - was waiting for something to go horribly wrong as usual !!
Must admit that I don't know all of the rules but from the puzzled expressions on the players, they were bemused as to some of the decisions against them.
I certainly saw a few that I was scratching my head at.
The sin binning of the Irish player was a strange one. Frame work that the ref went through and was going to give a red. Then bizarrely came up with the idea that because Orlando took it well and “still a leg drive after contact” it wasn’t a red? So basically if Orlando had dived to the ground then it would have been a red? So you can commit foul play but it’s a yellow/red depending on if the player is good at taking a wack to the head or bad at taking a wack to the head? Setting a precedent to start play acting like our soccer friends.
As far as the non red card goes, under the current framework for deciding if it was red or yellow, it was a bit confusing to hear the decision making of the referee. However, whilst I understand the need for tackles to move away from the head, I’m glad he wasn’t red carded. I think there’s a world of difference between that tackle and someone charging in with a shoulder to the head of someone trapped in a ruck or maul situation. There’s far too many red cards being bandied about and it’s much better to have played like we did against, mainly, 15 rather than a team a man short.
Feel for mark wilson. Due to England’s shocking 6 Nations he has been overlooked by Garland who in the past said he was a phenomenal player at a dinner I attended.

Have to endorse what Barry says about Mark Tampin, I’ve been critical of his performances in the past so only fair to give him a pat on the back when he’s played well. I’m hoping he’s just lacked confidence and that yesterday will give him the boost to play like that in future.

Of course I’d rather play against a team that doesn’t suffer a red card.
But that was a red in how the game is played today. shoulder to the head , with force. There was zero mitigation , Orlando was upright he didn’t dip and Irish player didn’t change his body height. And now suddenly this chat about “ahhhh well he took it well” is now mitigation during the game. Could have resulted in a serious injury.
Head shots have always been a red card and now it’s being policed strictly and I think for the good. Our players wear the sensors for Durham Uni for research into concussion and brain injuries , it’s a serious matter. Players need to adapt and lower their shots , and if they wack people close to the shoulder line then you run the risk of seeing a red if you get it wrong.
Refs not applying consistency and talking themselves out of what is the obvious won’t help. Player safety and health trumps wanting to play the game against 15 players.

Going back further, Rotherham in 2003 (56-10), Wasps 2000 (59-21) and Bristol 1997 (50-8). So only the second time ever to do it against a team who didn't go on to finish rock bottom.
And don't forget the 156-5 win over Rugby Lions.

It’s just a different opinion.
Quote:PurpleGroundhog
Barry, I’m aware of why it’s happening and fully agree with the need to take the contact area away from the head, I just have a slightly different opinion on a deliberate barge to the head to someone who gets it wrong making a genuine attempt to tackle. If someone deliberately drove a car at me, knowing the potential outcome, I’d expect the punishment for them to be worse than someone who clipped me thinking they could get past when there wasn’t enough room.
It’s just a different opinion.
I do get that. But the whole point is to deter players from tackling at that height. So in your analogy they trying to stop them trying to get the car into a situation where it can hit you.
Also players tackle at that height knowing the potential risks. Players need to adapt to the way the laws are applied and tackle below the shoulder line. There was zero mitigation. I can understand if Orlando had dipped into the tackle or the Irish player had changed his height to tackle ... but neither happened. It was completely reckless.
I bet most refs that would have been a red.

I meant to add that I thought the TOM suggested another look after the ref said red and swayed the decision which I thought was a disgrace. Red all day in my book.
Yes the TMO heard the ref say red card and said “I’m going to show you another angle and look at the leg drive, he drives through the contact area and keeps going”
The triggered the ref to acknowledge some subset of the rule and come down to yellow.
We may not agree on it being a red but the officials obv reminded themselves at a rule or an agreed interpretation
Which means he will prob get the assessors tick for it

I know that is taken into account to discuss ban length etc at hearings. But is it used for on field mitigation?
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2021:05:09:09:49:51 by Barry555.
Firstly I think it was a red all day long under recent evidence.
Secondly, having watched the game again, I dispute there was any leg drive from Orlando after impact, he was leaning backwards and just trying to stay on his feet.
Thirdly, given the players are wearing impact sensors, I would be interested to know whether that impact to the chin measured any higher than a good tackle just below neck height - I have a feeling a chest high tackle could cause more whiplash effect?

3 comments I would make on the card incident:
Firstly I think it was a red all day long under recent evidence.

I’d imagine CD that’s the whole idea of the study. To find stuff like that out.
1. I don’t think it should have been a red
2. Except if you were being consistent with most recent interpretations, in which case it should.
3. It’s absolutely right for the long term future of the game to cut out dangerous head contact. But there are plenty of other incidents eg attackers handing off/running through defenders with arguably a higher degree of danger- there does need to be some proportion and appreciation that rugby is inherently a dangerous sport.
Other than that- enjoyed the game. And with apologies for being a bit provocative- had Sam Stuart have had the game Schreuder had we’d have been singing his praises and lauding him. He was everywhere, quick to the breakdown, accurate passing and kicking, and I felt he was a little more on the front foot than he had been in other games. Credit where due- perhaps it just takes time to adjust to the house style in a different country.
Yes Schreuder was excellent. He also attacked with the ball right at the breakdown....
When everyone is fit it will be tough to see who gets in but
A back three of
Brown
Radwan
Stephenson
And a centre pairing of Orlando and Burrell
But then we can add
Penny
Wacececoke
Flood
What a set up it is.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again... we’ve never signed a bad one from Natal! Great game Schreuder.
Connon chucking perfect passes to thread our midfield through gaps in the Irish defence, well played.
I was critical of the back row at Glaws, the balance was there yesterday. Great physicality from them today, dominant at the gain line and breakdown.
It was a fantastic match up of young English outside backs. The much lauded Irish back three of Loader, Parton and OHC were bested by our boys. It was notable the level of of physicality Radwan, Penny and Stevenson bring to our play when compared with the Irish three. Brilliant to see!
Last but not least, Tampin. Now I’ve been one to highlight his deficiencies at the set piece and other struggles... but yesterday he had one great cameo. Took the ball to line with confidence, threw a couple of offloads and was positive in his play. Ah You-eqsue performance.

There, fixed that for you
We shouldnt be rewarding one of our top performing players the bench when a 36 year old comes in. Brown has to fight for that position. Penny has made it his own.
If Brown makes the same impact Fearns made in his 20 mins on Saturday then we're in a good position....
Im also not sure we'll see much more of Flood. Emergency cover maybe...he'll be more involved in the coaching i would suspect. Getting Connon and Haydon Ward up to speed.
Lucock has shown what an impact he can have in the midfield...Wakecoke is a good player also...

The Back Row were dominant.
Schreuder moved the ball quicker.
Connon kicked a 100% record and not easy either.
Centres defended resolutely.
Stevenson, Penny and Radwan were superior to their more acclaimed opposite numbers.
Mcguigan and Stevenson were the stand out performers for me. Previously when without Graham we have struggled to get that go forward but we had it this week without him.
Marvellous performance.

The difference for me was HOW they attacked. We actually took the ball at pace, running at the gaps, space in the defence...gaps we had created by intelligent play prior to that by quick carries and snipes by Schrueder etc.
Look at the two big breaks by Chick and Burrell....both took the ball at pace and ran at the gaps.
Orlandos play for Stevensons try...just created that space, and time for Stevenson who finished brilliantly as he still had a lot to do.
when did we last see our wingers actually given ball in positions where THEY can back themselves.
Hell even Tampin made a break from the ruck and popped an offload for a try.
The problem i have is that due to form...we'll go back in our shell v Saints and play the old boring turgid dross.
I didn’t notice our tight 5 set piece that much because I was too busy watching them carrying , offloading and being ball players! Was great to see.

I think a lot of it is mindset. That wasn’t a poor Irish team. That was an Irish team loaded with internationals. And that second half we dominated , we were the aggressors and there was a swag about us. If we go into every game like that then we will be happy and have a good chance of beating teams.

Obviously we have to play in the right areas...be tactically astute. Kick for territory when required etc. But then when its on...open it up like we did on Saturday...
The problem is the lads have shown us they CAN play like that ...so we have expectations now.
And Budget isnt in the conversation ...

I’m sure we had a similar debate about George in his first spell here
I’m also sure he declared himself for Ireland and currently is not on their radar cos he’s out of the country.
Doesn’t mean he can’t change his mind but I then don’t know if there have been any representative games which have settled that
Next job is to repeat it.
Can they?
I may have made that up, though... struggle to remember what I had for breakfast let alone a few seasons ago!

I seem to remember the rumours when mcguigan left was that he’d go to Ireland to pursue honours there, but ended up going to tigers instead so presumably didn’t pursue it?

That could be true tbh. Many players look at getting international recognition that way. Wouldn’t blame him if he did.
He does seem a different person since coming back from Tigers and I know I share similar opinions to others on here that he is one fo the best English hookers. If he’s not involved with Saxons this summer then I give up with the whole England setup.
I remember seeing Davey Wilson in a coffee shop with England scrum coach (west?) well before he was capped so would hope that sort of stuff continues.
From what I’ve heard/read Eddie has zero relationship with some Prem rugby clubs.

I think Phil Van Der Walt is an immense player, just oozes class. When all players are fully fit, we now have depth in the pack.
Feel for mark wilson. Due to England’s shocking 6 Nations he has been overlooked by Garland who in the past said he was a phenomenal player at a dinner I attended.
VDW is a dead ringer for Richard Arnold who was with Gosforth when it became the Falcons.
It was something like 40 tries in 35 games.
Can anyone remember exactly what it is? Someone on another forum has just said there are wingers with better try scoring records who deserve an England call up for these summer games...and im pretty sure theres not many!
From the link at the top of the page (I added one game as he played at the weekend but didn't score).

Can someone confirm to me the stat on Radwans try scoring....they mentoned it on Prem Rugby
It was something like 40 tries in 35 games.
32 tries in 40 starts (+3 subs), but that includes Cup & Championship games as well as the Prem (where he has 4 tries in 12 starts (+1 sub)).
We've also not won a game without him this season.
Radwan stats
Our two flyers have only had a few games here and there to show what they can do as most of the games we’ve went into our shell. The games that they have been given good ball like Saturday they’ve excelled. Really happy with Radders and Stevenson as our wide threats.

They have been fantastic this season though and ran some teams ragged this season.
Easier to do when you have a platform and plan to give the wingers oppertunities
Imagine Radwan in a set up like that.
And i fully agree Hassle Collins looks some player as does Loader...but show me what Radwan can do in that environment.
Give him the ball with a bit of space and the lad scores a cracking try...with power and finishing skill.
Im highly critical of our performances at times and i dont apologise...
Generally its because i really believe we have some cracking players...and the coaches dont set the gameplans to get the best out of them.
Thats why when other fans push others ahead...i get very defensive.

Look at Stevenson at the weekend....a player very much under the radar compared to Radwan.

And no one should object to that - we all have our favourites and style of play - I like to watch 7's rugby for what it is and obviously love to see the Falcons score 50+ but have mixed feelings about the game on Sunday (Q v W), entertaining yes, but was it good rugby...... no! In my younger days playing local rugby, one of the best games was a 3-0 win (I was a slow prop!).
The team has to get into the right position on the pitch first before they can let loose - the coaches identified that the Irish defence was such that we could - and did - against most sides this won't work.
In my opinion we play to win first, stop the other side scoring second and flair comes third - it's great if we can do all three but the other two come first
Some love it for the high scoring games. Some love it for the contact. Some love it for the low scoring 15-10 mud bath. Some love the jeopardy.
Eye of the beholder. Main thing is the game grows and fan base with it.

But whilst there are obviously gameplay nuances, the best/most successful sides play their style regardless and aim to impose it on the opposition. We should aim to do what we do extremely well and let the opposition worry about what we're going to do rather than the other way around.
That might mean you come unstuck sometimes but at least its your identity that the fans and players buy into and can get behind.
PLay for territory when required, control the game etc...you have to be sensible at times,...we all accept that.
But when its on...open it up and play...and attack with ferocity and pace.
Regarding the wingers, I think it will be hard for our guys to get in given how many options are available and from teams higher up the league than ours. Guys like Sleightholme at Saints have plenty of tries this season whereas ours don't in comparison, although I wouldn't say it was their fault for this.
But with Eddie no one can ever be certain what or who he will pick. I do think the England backline lacks a bit of size, so I reckon he will try and add players that fits this criteria.
If I was to put money on it I’d put it on Stevenson.
Both have worked so hard this season and I’m happy for Stevenson to get a new two year deal.
Be interesting to see the squad selections for the summer.
