The DWs Best Ever Wasps Fifteen - Part 4: Half Backs

So we have all (?) agreed on a set of forwards to get out on a park and win the match for the Drunken Wasps. All that remains now is to select the seven players that determine by how many. Starting this week with the Half Backs - and given how many decent players we have had in this area, the results were surprisingly unsurprising.
Here are the results for the Half Backs, these guys will be added to the DW Dream Team:

Howley & King = 24 votes
Melville & King = 1 vote
Melville & Andrew = 1 vote
Melville & Cips = 1 vote
This first gentleman re-taught me a valuable lesson about not opening your mouth too quickly or with too much certainty. A waste of space, knackered old Welshman was the gist of my comments just before he arrived and he rammed them firmly down my throat almost immediately. With 24 votes who can argue with Rob Howley for the 9 shirt. He was only with us for three years and played as many games in the red of Wales as he did for Wasps (59) but what an impact those games had on our club. Everybody will remember Howley corner in the Heineken Cup, the home of the ‘lost cause’. But week in week out Rob was a class act at Scrum Half with almost perfect decision making skills and a beautiful pass. On top of that Howler is a lovely guy who always had time for the fans. Honourable mentions must go to Matt Dawson and the great Nigel Melville but they were always going to be in trouble going up against the ‘Welsh Wizard’.
Next comes the No10 shirt and this was possibly even more clear cut than the 9 place. Was it Rob Andrew, Dave Walder or Danny Cipriani – NO! With 25 votes the position goes to Alex ‘ The Wycombe Wiper ‘ King. How could it be otherwise, the man who controlled Wasps from that pivotal position for 11 years and scored more points than anyone else (1522) . Whether it was dropping the ball on a sixpence on a wet and windy day in Newcastle or launching over a drop goal that ripped the heart out of an opposition at Twickenham, Kinga was our man. When Wasps were winning titles every year he was at the helm. Alex only got 5 caps for England which was woefully low, but England’s loss meant that we in the B&G got to see him at his inspirational best 269 times. I think we all hope that one day we will see him back from France in a coaching capacity because if anybody can bring an understanding of Wasps and how to win it is Alex – Love Live The King.
