Everybody Hates Us, And Actually We Do Care

Life at Adams Park was always a little odd.  As the tenants of a Football Club at their ground it never really felt like home.  A situation that wasn’t helped by the bile spewed by a small but vocal group of Wycombe Wanderers’ supporters over on their forum.

As they struggle to avoid relegation and make financial ends meet Wasps were the root cause of all their troubles.  You’d have thought that they’d appreciate the money we brought in.  Not just rent, but food and drink sales in the ground itself on match days.  But no.  They just wanted us gone, and made it as clear as they could.

So gone we will be, and the hatred will stop right?

Sadly not.  Those parasitic idiots (that’s us by the way) caused irreparable damage to the club and the ground and I suspect we’ll be at the forefront of their minds for some time to come.  But that doesn’t matter as we’re going to our new home in Coventry where we’ve gone out of our way to make sure we treat our tenants better than we were treated.

But the problem is that they are a football team that is struggling too.  We may have bought them a brand new pitch, and given them priority on when they play, and committed to making sure they had everything they need to thrive at the ground WE bought.  But that doesn’t matter.  Some of them hate us more than the folk in Wycombe ever did.

The only problem with this is that it’s pretty hard to argue with them without feeling a little of their pain.  They are a team displaced in a ground they don’t own, and we know how that feels.  They say we’re not welcome in Coventry, and it's hard to disagree with them.  It’s not our home.  Maybe one day it will be, but for now it’s just a long way away – too long to go to regularly for many of us.  We still love Wasps, and we still want to support the club, but it's a little easier to see the other side of the coin now.

So we’ve got more attackers than ever (I haven’t even started on the Coventry Rugby Club crowd), and it’s not easy to disagree with them.  Everybody hates us and we actually do care, because we understand why.

It's true that not everyone in Coventry is happy about the move, but I would say the majority are. However it's not just about Coventry. There are plenty of potential fans in Warwick, Leamington, Nuneaton, Kenilworth, Rugby even Birmingham. The catchment area is massive. That's why I think that the name will never change to Coventry Wasps. I'm a Cov City fan and although some Cov fans would disagree with me, I'm looking forward to Wasps coming and see it as a positive. I've got tickets for the first two games and hoping that it all works out for both Sky Blues and Wasps. If the team play like they did yesterday and even bring some silverware to the City I'm sure even more people will get on board. I see this as a gift to the City, and we should embrace it.

If the final European game v Leinster in January is a winner take all, then I can see, with Leinster's travelling support, it being close to a sell out. I would have thought the local chamber of commerce would be drooling at the prospect.
