Kurtley Beale starts against Connacht at the Ricoh Arena
Wallaby signing Kurtley Beale is set to make his Wasps and European Champions Cup debut this Sunday, on his comeback match following a seven-month injury lay-off, when Wasps take on Connacht at the Ricoh Arena, kick off 1pm.
Wasps are also boosted by the return of England internationals Joe Launchbury and Nathan Hughes, who are the only changes to the pack that started against Worcester last Sunday.
Christian Wade returns from a foot injury to start on the right wing, with Josh Bassett lining up on the left. Dan Robson and Jimmy Gopperth form the half back partnership, while Beale starts at inside centre, alongside Alapati Leiua, in Wasps’ midfield combination.
Rob Miller returns to his more familiar position of full back, having impressed last week at fly half when he stood in for Danny Cipriani, who is still sidelined by a calf injury.
Ahead of the first leg of back-to-back games against Connacht Rugby, Wasps’ Director of Rugby Dai Young said:
“We’re really excited about playing Connacht, the defending Pro 12 Champions. They’re a quality side, with threats throughout, and I’m a huge fan of the way they play the game. They probably kick the least out of any European team and they will certainly test our defence. We won’t be able to switch off for a second. Hopefully, if we keep our defence structured, hungry and energised, we can force a few mistakes as well.
“We’re not looking too far down the road at this stage, the only thing we are concentrating on is getting our home game right at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday. In this competition, if you get your home game wrong, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re out, but it does put you under a lot of pressure. So it’s a massive game for us at the Ricoh Arena this Sunday.
“We go into the game in a good place, after what for me was one of our best wins of the season, because of the way the squad stuck together and worked for each other. They responded really well to the injuries we had picked up.
“It’s great to welcome back our captain Joe Launchbury and Nathan Hughes, who did really well on his first start for England last weekend.
“We’re also all very excited to have Kurtley Beale back fit and raring to go, although I suspect no one is more excited than Kurtley himself!
“I’ve been really impressed with his work ethic since he arrived. He’s worked his socks off to get back and he’s fitted in brilliantly with the squad. We all know how talented a player he is, but he’s also very humble and keen to develop further, which makes him a pleasure to work with.
“It was important to wait until he was feeling confident in his knee and his fitness, and it’s great he’s in that place now after being back in training with the squad for three weeks. It will naturally take him a bit of time to get up to speed with our patterns and to return to match-sharpness after a while out, so we’ll be patient on that front, but he’s looked hugely skillful in training and we’re all excited to have him back and ready to play for Wasps.”

There will also be a bumper Wasps Nest Fan Village in the Ericsson Exhibition Hall on Sunday, opening at 10.30am. Free fairground rides including dodgems will be available for rugby supporters to hop aboard free of charge, alongside a host of other activities that the whole family to enjoy.

Wow, great team. The injured are going to have to fight for their positions when ready.
We really do have a good squad depth this season. Last week proved that. Let's hope for a good win on Sunday, won't be easy.

Aside from Dillane and Aki, I don;t know much about that Connacht team.
Good team from Wasps. There are a couple of calls I wouldn't have made, but it's a great side. Excited to see Beale!

Great to see Beale starting.... although I'm nervous that he may have to play the full 80, as presumably he's covering fullback and 10 as well as starting at 12.
If we lose Gopps, then it's either Beale or Miller to 10
If we lose Miller, then it's either Beale or Gopps to 15
Either way, Beale has to cover throughout the game.
Front row options are looking better this weekend with JCW and Bristow back on the bench, and lots of back row options throughout the game.... and let's not forget that we have the best scrum half options in probably any league.
This is an important game, and I have a good feeling

Fantastic team and fantastic depth ...... very excited about this game and seeing Beale play for the first time.
Will be far from easy with very decent opposition but I'm confident we can win and if we can pull out a BP even better !

When we get our full backline running again (something like Simmo/Robson, Cips, leRoux, Beale, Daly, Wade, Miller) teams aren't going to be able to stop us when we have ball in hand.
I suspect we'll see teams try to beat us by being hugely physical around the park and at the breakdown and trying to starve us of possession.

That's a strong starting line up and bench considering the injuries and absentees! Can't wait for Sunday now. The way both team attack should make for a fantastic spectacle. COYW!

Agreed that Beale would be the best replacement for 10or 15 if injury so requires whilst he is still on the field. However, this does not mean he has to play the full 80. If injury at 10 or 15 occurs after Beale has been withdrawn, or if it is felt best to withdraw
Him after he has moved to 10 or 15, then Bassett can move to 15, Miller,if nec, to 10 and Hallsi comes on at 11.

Gutted that I have tickets for this- and can't go as illness strikes.
On paper, what a cracker to miss. I think I will be turning as green with envy as the away shirts when I switch on the TV for it.
Let us hope I am twice as gutted at the end as we win in style rather than being grateful to have missed it.....

Really? He has shown no signs of reverting to type in an England shirt, yet the minute he's back in a Saints shirt he's at it again. Problem is, suspensions picked up with his club leave him ineligible for England. Must be about 7-8 weeks till the Six Nations. Every chance a ban will extend beyond that. Eddie Jones must be fuming.

Couldn't agree more. If a player ducks and your arm lands on their shoulder you get a yellow?
If they jump and don't land well you get a red. It's rapidly looking like any attempt to tackle is going to be a penalty offence.

Kurtley was great but Joe L - what a great player. Definitely my man of the match. Was everywhere and that try....looked like he was walking it in.

Enjoyed that, two teams that wanted to run with it. Launchbury was superb and if it wasn't Beales first game I think he would have been given MOTM. Simpson did well when he come on and so did Macken with a few good carries.
Next week will be even tougher, Marmion looked like a great scrum half and Aki looked hard to put down always stepping or slipping the first tackle. Don't see why we can't go and win over there. Sort the scrum and we will have a great chance. And a different ref.
Next week will be even tougher, Marmion looked like a great scrum half and Aki looked hard to put down always stepping or slipping the first tackle. Don't see why we can't go and win over there. Sort the scrum and we will have a great chance. And a different ref.

Kyle and cips back next week will be crucial. Just adds that firepower. Any one of Kyle, Leiua, cips or gopps off the bench will cause big problems.
Short of hasks, Mac and Daly we're not far off a first choice 23 now. If you assume that sam and Matt symons would be in the mix but it's not like guy / young and Gasks / myall aren't obvious first choice 23.

That was a great match in any ways. Two teams massively up for it and of course the result going the right way makes it better. The officials proved it is not just the Prem that has some improvements to make. Big crowd over in support of Connacht made for a better than average atmosphere despite the disappointing 13k odd crowd. The casino might make a few quid!
Beale was pretty stand out but Launch lead from the front and was immense. Good showings from many others although we could have done without Jimmy doing a Danny at that point in the proceedings!
Let's hope the weather is abnormally calm in Galway next weekend. For those going enjoy it and get yourselves to the Crowes Bar near the ground.

Contact's speed and efficiency of clear out at the breakdown was some of the best I have seen, gave their backs quick ball and always looked dangerous from it.
Feels like one of those days where you take your 5 points and walk away slightly sheepishly from the game.
As already mentioned great captains knock by Joe when it was not going well, two turnovers in own twenty two then a try.
also why can our two nines never both have seem to have a good game in the same day!

Well done Wasps. Thrilling game for a neutral and I thought the disparity in score wasn't at all reflective of the game one that Connacht could easily have won.
Launchbury and Beale were absolutely outstanding. Dual MotMs. Some stiff competition from other great games this weekend but I suspect that one is well worth a rewatch or three!
Think the return fixture should be a great game too although poor goal-kicking and lineout issues are major obstacles for Connacht to sort.

Just got home after watching that. Great contest of almost equals, But, what a ref. Mr MaGoo lives. The break through players have got to stop running away from backup; getting turned over too much. This is going to be a close return match next week. Loads of Connacht supporters. Around me high above the halfway line in the East stand, there were a lot of season ticket seats empty, where I know they would normally be used. Most odd.
Launch was outstanding. Should have been MOTM. I guess Kurtley for me was close second, but that grin when he scored. Whereas when Launch scored, you could see him think, 'Oh @@@@, have I really got to run 15 yards?' He was seriously trying to get his breath back after that. He ran himself stupid all game. Great workrate.

Was at the game, ref nearly spoilt the game. Agree with all said above except my MOM would of been Tommy Taylor, he was everywhere and in everything.
Wades try should of been aloud, the shortest advantage the ref played.
The yellow card I still can't understand, will study the match later.

Also just back from the game. Joe Launchberry was just outstanding today. His defense was outstanding and he was everwhere. We must stop giving the ball away in our 22 though. Every time we attacked today we looked like scoring. Surprised only 13000 there today though

Really surprised about the comments re the ref.
Thought he and the linesmen missed a couple of important calls for Connacht in your 22; Connacht player tackled before he received the pass and a clear out from the side that resulted in a turnover. Lots of high tackles and clear outs by Wasps players especially Myall missed too. Yellow seemed harsh but was probably deserved based on the amount he missed in that regard. Breakdown refereeing almost comically unbalanced throughout the game. I suspect its worth a second view to get a more balanced opinion of his performance but for me he didn't have a great game and more calls benefited Wasps than Connacht although arguably the big two (card and no try) didn't and they were both very important.
Cross kick to Hughes and Wade looked fine to me. I'd agree a better ref might wait for it to land and play on before calling it over but it was such an ugly looking kick I can understand him calling advantage over.

You're surprised by negative comments about the ref, then proceed to highlight multiple times you believe he missed something and made the wrong call?? Your logic confuses me! Surely you're just proving the point that he had a terrible game!!
Regardless of how ugly a kick might look, you have to wait for it to land before you decide whether no advantage has been gained or not. It's not for the referee to decide what constitutes a good kick or not, blowing the whistle with the ball in the air is unacceptable. Wait on the outcome.

If someone had offered me the 5 points before the match, I would have bitten their arm off.
Not at our best at times but still had enough to secure the W. Last 20 miniutes was again telling. Enery boost from the bench.
Some individuals really played well. Launch and Nate were a close call for my MoM.
We can play better next week, not sure that they can. We will have learned a lot more about them and things to work on for the return game. Not sure that found out anything about us that they did not already know.
Crowd will be hugely partisan next week but that should not worry us.

Just back from the game. Was very nervous and thought Connacht were pretty solid all round and the score flattered us. The ref was a lottery and inconsistent throughout. Definitely a step up in intensity from the last few games.
Will always be pleased with 5 points though and thinking back on the game, Connacht's tries came when we were a man short and from a Gopperth howler (Cips has competition!), so whilst they looked threatening, they didn't really pin us back in our 22 much.
Thought Launchbury was magnificent as was Ashley, who has turned in immense performances consistently of late.
Thought we improved with Simmo's speed around the breakdown and box kicking and Macken's solidity - Leiua didn't have a good time at 13, missing a few tackles and ran some poor lines straight into contact.
All in all a job well done!

just in from match thought a great team performance against a 16 man connacht if you include ref Even diplomatic Dai had some words to say on that matter on 5 live as we drove home.for him to pass comment is very unusual normally very supportive of referees

Agree that for Dai to comment about the ref is very unusual, he like Rob Baxter always a true gent in that department unlike some DORs (we all know who they are). Don't think Connacht can have any complaints at all about the ref. In fact looking up the refs previous games they seem to be 7s tournaments which explains a lot, particularly the lack of advantage.

That's understandable. Re-reading it its not especially clear. It's a game you won comfortably in the end so Wades (non)try or the card made no difference. For me the lack of advantage was a bad call. The card was harsh but those are being given right now and I think Wasps got away with an awful lot of that in the first half so my feeling is a card if not that one, wasn't harsh. Dai only needs to watch Myall for the first twenty and he'll be thankful he had him on the field the whole game.
Connacht had enough chances to take the ref out of the game but I am surprised that Wasps feel hard done by. On that basis I think they may be in for a shock next week if the ref rewards Connacht for their better breakdown work and penalises high tackling.

I'd have been thrilled if the ref had penalised high tackling because the number of high tackles that they got away with was ridiculous. Especially after there'd been a yellow given against us for it. And as for reffing the breakdown...really? The amount of times he pinged Connacht without ever having a chat with them and giving a warning for a yellow was a joke.

It's always fascinating to read the differing views of the same game. To me we defended (structured & scramble) really well and despite having lots of the ball Connaught never really looked like scoring from open play. Both their tries were gifted to them by us.
Might have been a different story had they punished our ill discipline (again! note to Dai need to work on this) and built a score with penalties. No premiership side would have wasted so many relatively straight forward opportunities.
Shout out to an unheralded player week in week out - Tommy Taylor. Does a huge amount of 1st up tackling and very rarely misses one. Not too shabby as a 1st up carrier either. Launch was easily MoM. Great look on his face after scoring... obviously meant a lot.
Cant put my finger on what is going on with the scrum. Earlier in the season it was going well. Now it is becoming an achilles heel. Might be with JCW and Chesty having been/being out for a while, props, Mullan in particular, are in need of some R&R.
Bench did another excellent job of uping the pace and pressure late on in the game. Connaught seemed to be losing players to injury at regular intervals especially in the middle part of the game.

Agree with this. I've just rewatched the game and the ref missed a hatful of high tackles, especially one on Young in their 22. Add to that two clear neck rolls at the breakdown by Connacht players on Launchbury and Young. Having seen the Beale card it was pathetic.
The ref was just guessing for a lot of the game. Even worse were his decisions on which direction the ball went out of contact - the ball bounced off a Connacht shoulder into the path of one of their players and he called 'backwards', whilst Young lost the ball on the deck and it rolled backwards and he said 'forwards'. Right at the end when their scrum half knocked the ball forwards to blow a try, the ref shouted 'backwards, no I mean forwards' - quite comic really.
Worryingly though, I think this high tackle stuff needs a rethink as it's just a lottery. Taller players like Gaskell and Myall tackling players of say, Wade or Eastmond's height, all at speed, is going to be near impossible to get right every time. Both the Beale and Gaskell high tackles involved the player tackled ducking.

Great game, Wasps under the cosh with scrum, ref and yellow card but bounced back. Launch was my MOM but great to see Kurtly play so well. Hear his agent is "in talks" to maybe extend the 1 year contract. Hats off to Connaught - great energy and skill, will be a humdinger next week.
Dai will have selection headaches especially in the backs, but also needs to get Mullan confident again.
Was also wondering how it is Wade used to free run in space with try time frequent now is always pinged as soon a she gets the ball. Is it me or has he lost pace?

I don't believe Wade is any slower. A couple of years ago he and TV2 both used to get the ball early, in space, often the product of a miss pass from Goode. However we had few attacking options then. Wade's involvement dropped away last year as Piutau, whilst a force of nature with ball in hand, rarely passed. Now we're blessed with attacking threat across the back line and so it often doesn't get as far as CW without another gap being created / exploited.
Think he did okay yesterday but I do think he is struggling to understand how he can up his workrate effectively. He often seems to track players a little too far from them and so doesn't get the offload but instead is the first man at the breakdown - not the best use of his skill set. He came off his wing once yesterday and was effectively used as a crashball - again not playing to his strengths. He does need some really focused winger coaching - part of the reason I think he would come on massively if he ever got into the England squad, as Nowell and May have really progressed. Maybe Le Roux coming in will help him as he's a v intelligent player out wide.

Watched an awful lot of Rugby over the weekend, and like Mowen saw loads of head "strokes", above the shoulder, and semi head rolls that weren't penalised or more in our game and the others

Have been search the inter web on Beale and he turns out to be quite a place kicker, especially from his own half. So hopefully with him and Daly we have two extra kicking weapons in our ammo box.
Also I would like to see him run with the ball a lot more hence would like to see him at 15.

Also I would like to see him run with the ball a lot more hence would like to see him at 15.

If a player knows he is likely to be tackled then he's not going to be taking the tackle standing straight is he? He'll be leaning forwards or he'll be in danger of being driven backwards.
Therefore defenders need to learn to only aim for chest or lower when tackling.

The trouble with aiming for the chest or lower is that if the attacking player is ducking into the tackle the defender is only presented with a very small target to aim for, much like the rucks where they get unfeasibly low so you can't get underneath them to force them off
the other option I suppose, would be to tackle them as they pass and bring them down from behind, however you give them yards and rick getting tied into the wrong side of the ruck

Coddy that's exactly the issue the ruling bodies are trying to eradicate. Been going on too long without policing except for extreme examples. Problem is the coaching throughout the game, all levels, have not insisted on focus on lower body when a tackler approaches a tackle, hence many/most are upright when the ball carrier arrives and any lowering of body position by the ball carrier results in head or neck contact. Gonna take time and harsh calls will be made but for me it is the right approach.
