In the Junior World Championship our young guns face their toughest challenge yet as they enter the knockout stages. They face South Africa. Jonathan Joseph is being rested. Marland Yarde starts and Guy Armitage is on the bench.

First blood to England thanks to the boot of Ford. He is still only 18 and a record holder as the youngest player ever to play in a Premiership game. England continues its bright start against the favourites when they score in the corner. When England get another long range penalty there is a distinct possibility of the Babyboks conceding a double point deficit. The kick drifts wide. With the first quarter gone, the ‘Boks have had their chances and England have proved as solid in defence as in attack. In the end it is a simple mistake with a cut-out pass that allows the babies through for a try. A simple conversion will bring them to within a point but it is missed. England bounces back and slot another penalty. As half time approaches an English infringement allows South Africa to reduce the deficit to three. Goosen uses the final kick of the half to tie the match at 11 apiece. It is a score that England would have taken beforehand but feels disappointing having been more than a score ahead, and played the better rugby.

England comes storming out of the blocks. Yarde is on hand but Skipper Gray does not need him and grounds the ball himself. Again the conversion is missed, but it is still an important score. A kick ahead sits up for Marland but it kicks up just too violently for him to control and he is denied a simple run in. South Africa respond, England are too quick shutting down the scrum half and the ‘Boks narrow it to 16-14. Marland takes a knock and is replaced by Guy Armitage. Wade forces a penalty to take England into the final quarter with a 5 point advantage. The game is not over. Suddenly South Africa looks dangerous and win a kickable penalty of their own setting up a 19-17 finish. The BabyBoks are clear - Guy makes a try saving tackle. England has a scrum in front of their own posts with little more than ten minutes remaining. Guy does everything required of him to set Christian Wade free with a fine pass that allows him to show his sevens pace with a fine individual try. South Africa come storming back and look certain to score. It is Wasps second rower Lawsbury who makes the try saving tackle. We are down to the final minute. Vunipola does the walk of shame for England. 3 points bring South Africa to within a converted try in the final play of the match. Another try saving tackle from Guy pushes the player into touch inches from the line. There is time for the lineout. England secures the line and clears but still the ref will not blow the final whistle. The clearance goes up field, a scrum, England win it without the help of Vunipola and get the ball off the pitch. England will now play France and New Zealand Australia in the semi-final guaranteeing a North-South clash in the final.
