Cardiff 2 - The Backlash

After 'Cardiff 1 - The Giveaway', everyone was wondering what would await us in the next instalment of these rugby genre films regularly premiered at the Mad Stad Theatre.

Most punters arrived at the theatre with caps, hats, beanies and scarfs, obviously worried that this instalment may descend into another horror show and should this happen, eyes could be quickly averted/hidden. Families also worried that the 'U' rating, might actually require a 'PG' ensured that all kids were decked out with flags, again to cater for the worst should they need to avert their kids eyes also....

We were also joined by a strange friendly bunch of people with blue hats, who seemed to have a penchant for engaging in French chants with welsh accents...bizarre ! They were keen to see a remake of 'Cardiff 1 - The Giveaway'. All the actors were the same and many had received  awards (6 Nations and Lions ) for performances in previous films....surely it would be the same plot with the same ending ! What could go wrong ?

Smith, the director of some recent disappointing films, low on plot, little excitement and whose endings just fizzled out, was bullish when interviewed about this latest offering. We were going to see an action packed film, that would keep us on the edge of our seats and.....most importantly would have a happy ending !  A strong cast, including 'Shane - The Orchestrator' who had only played supporting roles in recent features was restored to leading man and there was also a welcome return of 'Skivs - The General' .

So....what did we get ?? Well, it certainly wasn't a classic or a horror show, but rather an entertaining,  family friendly affair, with moments of excitement and... as the plot thickened into the final quarter, a fair degree of suspense. Finally and most importantly....there was a happy ending ! Everyone left happy (well happier than after recent features), apart from the blue hatted people...but at least they'd stopped chanting !

Next weeks feature is premiering at a new theatre in a new part of the world for these type of films.  Will they be a success at this venue ?? Time will only tell.  How will Smith direct this one ? Let's hope for a David and Goliath struggle, with the inevitable happy ending ! Why not ?? This is the movies after all !! Anything is possible !!
