Joy oh joy. We win our first home game of the season against Gloucester. Everyone is in a better mood. The site gets very busy again.

An Ed’s Diary – 24th September 2003

London Irish 16 – 10 Gloucester. Huzzah!! we’ve won our first home game of the season. If anything the score flatters Glaws. I am tad worried that we may still be suffering the same problem as last season, an inability to score tries despite huge amounts of pressure. For now that is in the background, we are both relieved and happy. If we’d lost this game we’d all have known that the rest of the season would be a relegation dogfight, now we have a chance of avoiding that.

Result aside I had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. I spent both Saturday and Sunday in the hotel which allowed me plenty of time for socialising and drinking. Suffice it to say I did a lot of both and had a hangover to prove my excesses on Monday. We had a car park party before and after the game, Reading_Glasses brought a large container of his devilish Pimms mixture. I’m not sure how much of it I had but by the time the game started I was floating nicely.

One other thing we did this weekend was have a reunion of the Henley ‘Flatulence Fairy’ shirts. This was a great success. Almost all of us who were wearing the shirts were approached asking after them. Someone even offered James McIntyre £200 for his. As far as I can tell nobody parted with theirs. We’ll have to have another fairy day later in the season.

There is some lingering controversy in Leicester about the use of the drums there. A couple of people have written to the local paper to complain. I wonder if taking drums to away fixtures will be dropped.

The victory has done wonders for the sights statistics, 15.5k on Monday and just over 12k yesterday. Last week the same two days were 11k and 8k. It looks like we will end the month with about 230k hits making it our second busiest ever after last May. This is all the more remarkable as we only have three games this month. Last September, when there were five games, we had 158k hits.

Next Saturday we play Quins at the Stoop. This will be the first time in many years I have missed this fixture. The cross-board banter is in full swing, all of it thus far very good natured. Quins have started the season very well, two good wins out of two. After last Sundays game I think we can beat them but it will be a tough game. Only time will tell.
