We have an very unexpected away win at Northampton. The promotion-relegation debate rages on the board after Reading Fatboy stirrs things up.
An Ed’s Diary – 13th October 2003
Northampton 24 – 30 London Irish. Joy oh joy!! I do believe that most of us expected to lose this match beforehand. Indeed we went seven down after a few minutes at which stage JoeV was heard to mutter something about us getting ‘a good di*king’. Suffice it to say he was wrong, we ran in three trys in a ten minute period and were 24 – 7 up mid way through the first half. Full credit to the Saints, they came back at us hard but we held them. Tofty had another blinder. He has been voted MOTM again, the third time out of our first five games of the season, quite remarkable.
One particularly interesting thread has been on the mb. I started it off simply with the results of the other ZP games last weekend and saying that I thought Rotherham were now doomed to relegation. What really got things going was a classic Reading Fatboy rant on the subject of relegation/promotion.
As I write there is an ongoing dispute between the recently promoted clubs, Leeds and Rotherham, and English Premiership Rugby over money. It appears that all the established clubs get £1.8 from central funds, the two newcomers get substantially less. With some justification the Leeds and Roth supporters are accusing the established ZP clubs of acting like a cartel.
What was particularly impressive about the thread is that all sides of the promotion/relegation debate were argued with an amazing insight into the complexity of the arguments. We were joined on the board by several supporters of other clubs. One of them said ‘This is the best rugby discussion I’ve seen on these boards’. I have to agree, top marks to RFB for getting things going.
