The line-ups for the game between Sale Sharks and Harlequins, Friday 17th September. Edgeley Park. Kick off 7.45pm.

After two thrilling games in the opening two matches of the new Aviva Premiership rugby season, Quins will be disappointed not to have turned such good performances into more points and head to face Sale tomorrow determined to get their first win on the board.
There are a number of changes to the starting line-up which faced Northampton Saints last Saturday at the Stoop.
With Ugo Monye sidelined due to a toe injury, George Lowe moves to the wing and British Lions tourist and summer signing, Ollie Smith, makes his first competitive start for the London side.
Tom Guest will play in the number 8 shirt with the England number 8, Nick Easter, moving to the second row, a move which for this particular match, the Quins Director of Rugby has discussed with Martin Johnson. Ollie Kohn moves to the bench.
In the front row Matt Cairns and James Johnston, who have been sharing the workload with Chris Brooker and Mark Lambert, get the starting call-up.

Looking ahead to Friday's Aviva Premiership game at home to Harlequins (7.45 p.m.), Sale Sharks Head Coach Mike Brewer said, "Quins have competed pretty well in their first two matches, particularly against a Northampton team that's highly rated.
There are areas in the way that they play that we'll have to watch, and there are areas that we'll look to try and exploit. One of the key things for us is our defence, our discipline. They've got key players in the 8-9-10 channel with Easter, Care and Evans and they're strong at the back with Mike Brown. We've got to stop them playing, and that will be the responsibility of the tight five in the pack. Danny's a wonderful little player, and I remember Nick as a young guy in New Zealand. The best way to stop a nine and ten playing is to dominate their pack. As a team they work hard for each other. We went down to try and beat Sarries and came unstuck. For this week, it's about getting things right, addressing the issues, learning from the mistakes we made. In the Premiership, you don't have much time to dwell on things. You've got address them, correct them, and then put them to bed and move on."

I like the look of that - it's pretty close to the most effective combination we've had on the field. Other than Marler and possibly Browne getting on, I'd be quite happy to see that team play the full 80.

glad we'll have easter. robshaw, skinner and guest all on at the same time. would rather see lowe at 13 and camacho on the wing with ollie smith on the bench (or after monday's performance, maybe even out of the squad entirely). I think it's a slight waste of lowe's talents putting him on the wing, and I'd rather see him continue to forge a partnership with jth. and out of smith and camacho, based on monday night camacho is far more deserving of a start. hopefully smith will take his chance though and put in a blinder of a performance

Maybe the thinking is that Ollie can guide Jordan on his decision-making for a few games. If so, it's a worthwhile investment.
I suspect in George's case it's a simple question of wanting to make sure that one of our more talented players is on the pitch in some capacity. I don't expect to see him hanging around on the edge of the park much (well, actually I don't expect to see him at all as I'll be watching Dara O'Briain instead. Who would also be wasted on the wing). I also expect we'll end the match with Camacho on the wing and George back at 13.

I would guess the latter. It happened several times last season, and makes good sense I reckon. We can't do without Easter, and yet we don't have any other player with Guest's attributes.

With Smith and Guest starting, Easter at lock, Lowe shoe horned into the backs, it looks like COS is trying to get as much talent and experience on the pitch as possible. If we want to stake a claim as a top six team we need to start winning and putting teams like Sale away.
Not easy.
Pleased to see Johnston getting a start. We've failed to match up with Lambert in the front row for either game so far this season, and Johnston has looked solid and a reliable ball carrier.
Hopefully that'll give us some greater stability in the first half. Sheriden hasn't been quite the player for a while IMHO, still concerned about his impact in the second half though. I think we need to get ahead in the game early on.

If we win this one and our next two, I'd say we've had a good start to the season with three and a half wins from five. If we lose this and we win the next two, I'd say same old Quins as ever, all mouth and no trousers. Anything worse and we're looking in trouble.

The changes in the front row were no surprise to any but I am really glad that Tom is finally getting a start.
Always thought that Lowe would feature on the wing soone rather than later and I predict he will play a blinder. He has so much confidence and is willing to back himself that I think he could score tries from anywhere.
Hard on Camacho but I think it was the right call to keep the bulk of the same team together.
It is going to be a cracker of a game and for some un-quinnish reason I feel very confident!!

I think this is something of a make or break season for lambert. I know props take longer to mature and he has had pretty bad luck with injuries, but last season he started as first choice and then dropped behind andress and possibly before injury struck, and whenever i've seen him and jj play in the same match, jj has impressed me more, and not just due to his size

I posted last sesason that Easter could start moving up to lock as he gets older/slower, and that would also give Guest more game time. I've also said that it seemed very effective this season. Great move IMO - and nice to know that JK/COS listen to me!
It could also be a clever bit of going against the grain - keep a fast, mobile pack out there to start, then bring on some more bulk when the oppo starts to tire. And what better bench player at the moment than the Mohican Man himself?
Ollie Smith is a strange choice, judging by recent reports. Maybe it's felt that he's more of a big game player? I'm also surprised Casson hasn't got even a bench spot, as he's had some excellent reviews.

Just come in on the team news. I sense (statng the obvious) that Easter at lock has a multi-layered rational:

b) It allows Guest a well deserved start
c) they are not rushing Browne who I think they see as along term first choice 5 but may bring on earlier this time.
Less sure what it says about OK other than it was felt that Minty and TG starting was a better choice than OK and Minty with TG on the bench.
Given Monday night I am surprised at Ollie Smith starting, but keen to see how he goes. George Lowe will do well on the wing as he's the kind of player who will get involved and could unlock a defence from there.

Smith's a good smart player, he just had bricks for hands on Monday. Presumably they think it was an aberration - certainly his handling was always a strength in the past.

I was surprised it is a Friday night game. County are away this weekend and there is no clash. It seems that both Falcons and Sale prefer a Friday fixture.

Sitting behind the bench on monday night. Ollie was very self critical when he came off, I suspect he's surprised he's playing too given what he thought of his own performance. I think he only played 20mins so descison may of been made before the game.
Camacho had a good game on monday but I'm not surprised to see him start on bench as he played all if not most of 80 mins on monday. I would expect to see Camacho come on for Ollie and Lowe go to centre at some point.

I think it's out of order actually. Making your opponents travel up and play a match on a weekday evening when their fans are at work gives you a silly advantage. Sale play the majority of their home games on a Friday, so they are used to it. Surely it must be difficult for other teams to prepare for. Look what happened when we played Worcester on a Wednesday due to a postponed game (can't remember if it was last season or the one before).

I suppose Sale have a bit of an excuse in that they share with a football team, Newcastle use the excuse of better atmosphere (really) and not wanting to clash with the football team or matches their supporters may be playing with.

And there I was think this season would be different. Still no away win since last December, and we only one that by 3 points against leeds. Good first half and then did S*** all in the second. And Exeter at home isn't going to be easy at all. Urgh why oh why Quins.

Commentator (ex-ref) very surprised that there were no yellow cards against Sale a couple of times when quins were close to scoring.
Sounds like we played a good first half and everything seemed to go against us second half.

It is supposed to be different this season; good pre-season (allegedly) a (mostly) fit side; a new skipper (sent off and cited in succcesive games, not the way to lead!);stupid penalties; only playing for 50 minutes (how many times do we fume about that); Drivel about playing well, how upset the team are etc. to come I suspect.
Pathetic.
Quins will not get any where playing like that. You have to play for 80 minutes, not take your foot off the gas once you are ahead. We need a fit tighthead NOW to back up JJ. Lambert doesn't seem up to it.

The most worrying aspect is that given that Exeter appear competitive (and we play them next!) there is potentially going to be a real dogfight to avoid relegation and based on the first three results, we are going to be right in the mix - how depressing is that in the middle of September especially when we were all secretly harbouring hopes of Hc next season just a couple of weeks ago?

The frustrating thing is that we know they are good enough when they commit and are determined. I thought that last seasons @#$%& poor performance was down to the hangover from "the incident" and Deano going. Now I'm beginning to think it was just Deano going.

Trouble is, I remember all the same things being said and talked about before we went down - we are too good, we are playing too well, it will come right in the end, suddenly, we were out of games and the trap door opened.
Playing well doesn't matter, converting large half time leads into wins does, and we cannot do it.
If Exeter start against us like they did against the Tiggers next week, can you really see us coming back? I can't.

I am so glad to be with Prof on this one. As a loyal Quins fan, I support the team through thick and thin; through ND1 to glorious performances in the HEc. For God's sake people, get some perspective - it's the THIRD game of the season fpr Christ's sake, not the 21st!!!
So we lost a game tonight. As Prof says, two narrow defeats and a draw, it's hardly the end of anyone's career. I only expect this sort of drivel from one person, and He Shall Be Conspicuous by his name's absence.

Quinky, my support is not in doubt. It isn't the one loss, or the draw, or the nearly win, that are the problems. It is the same problems as always, big leads at half time not converted into a win, a seeming lack of spirit/backbone or whatever you want to call it to close out games, to bury the opposition when comfortably ahead. Soooo disapointing, I had hope after the Northampton game. Obviously slightly misplaced.

It is exactly because we support them that we care, and that it hurts so badly when we keep seeing them doing these things time and again, and that we get too frustrated for words when the DOR comes out again and again and says that it will happen.
Quins supporters want one thing more than anything else, in my experience, to finally get rid of that awful tag of underachievers that has been stuck with us for so long.
We have a, potentially, world class back line - why is it so impotent near the line? Why can we not close these things out? Why can we not stop letting a game slip and try something to turn it around? Why don't we have that edge that makes Leicester, Wasps, Munster or Tolouse perennial winners, and us the gallent also-rans?

Look I know we will win games. But forgive me for expecting to win one of our first three matches. The fact is we drew against a weel wasps side failed to capitalise against a good Saints side and lost against a very week Sale side when we were 11 pionts up at half time.
If we finish top four I would be amazed and finishing outside top six is a failure for me and I would not put alot of money on that right now. But it is early days.
it is just very disapionting to hear all the posotive talk coming from the team and for them not to transform that to results. it just reminds me to much of last season.

I was. Still am, actually.
Either via winning the Amlin or by making sure that we finish top 6 - a task which seems difficult right now but it's worth remembering that in our worst season since relegation we were in with a shout till virtually the end of the season.
Sarries, Saints, Tigers look like being in the top 3, although Tigers look surprisingly mortal for once. The rest are not impressive so far, including us!

Either via winning the Amlin or by making sure that we finish top 6 - a task which seems difficult right now but it's worth remembering that in our worst season since relegation we were in with a shout till virtually the end of the season.

All I'll say is I'm not panicking. We have a great squad of players, quality coaching staff and brilliant fan support. Lets give it a bit more time before we start sacking the lot of them! When we beat Exeter with a bonus point win this night will be long forgotten.

It IS very disappointing and I suspect noone is more upset, angry and disappointed than the team. It's hard to fathom how we allowed this to slip away BUT I'm very much with Prof on it. This is a different set up and approach to last year. We are only 3 games in, and ofcourse it's hugely frustrating when we could have been on 12 points. Yet there is no need to panic at the moment. It's for the very reason that we could (should) have won these matches that should give us all good reason to be optimistic. I am convinced that we will come good and end up at least in the top 6.

We weren't that great for the opening 40 minutes either. Just better than a very mediocre Sale side. By the way, I was there.

For me the big turning point was Nick Evans missed second half penalty. He took an eternity, it didn't appear that difficult and after the miss Sale never looked back. Okay, the sin bins etc obviously cost us but if NE's kick had gone over I doubt there would have been any way back for Sale. Bizarrely, I actually thought we looked better with just 14 men when Ollie Smith was in the bin but that might just be me.

But in my defence they must have happened at the other end, it is difficult to view the opposite end under lights, and I also had a domestic situation as NE's missed penalty saw the ball knock my other 'arfs specs off which caused a bit of a problem. So his missed kick was painful in more ways than one.

all the reports have smith and vallejos down as being sinbinned. can't find a mention of robshaw anywhere, but reading this thread back it seems that the radio mistakenly announced one of them as him.

As one of the commentators said several times, how did Sale not get a sin-binning too? He's a former referee, and (I think) a former Sale player, so he's hardly going to be biased towards Quins.
It does seem that we get more than our share of cards. As mentioned elsewhere, Robshaw has now been cited for an incident in a game last week; however, Varndell wasn't cited for striking a player from behind after the whistle had blown.
When will referees start to notice our opponents' infringements as well???!!!!!

OK you lot have had your rant! It's my turn! I've been stewing on this all night. Having fought my way through the A1/M1/M60/M62 Friday rush hour traffic on the way there. And taken a very annoying diversion between J25 and 26 on the M60 on the way back, I was expecting better fare than just the excellent pint and pork and stuffing roll devoured by me in the west stand hospitality area pre match (the long/blonde haired general had a pasty and cappucino).
We were definitely the architects of our own downfall here in a game that we should have won be 30 to 40 points!!
DISCIPLINE and DEFENCE were clearly our main failings. Approx 16 penalised infringements: mostly preventing quick release, lying on the tackled player or coming in from the side. We just didn't learn at all and although not my favourite ref he was consistent so dont blame him. 2 yellows resulted. What also concerned me was how easily we bought midfield dummies or show and gos. Not good. More concern at the line out. Throw ins just not consistent enough. Got to agree with flagmeister, turning point the missed Nev kick 2nd half. Dicko was our stand out player. MacCleod for them but Andrew Sheridan had a massive impact when he came on...Gordon Bennett he came on with a point to prove and did..I'd almost say he turned the game for them.
OK thats the rant. Yes it's only the 3rd game but we've got to learn from this. We looked good after the first half and I was expecting a 30/40 point bonanza. We must stiffen up the sinnews and get a grip of ourselves. A big size 11 up the backside needed and I think they probably got it!
