Confident Welsh Display Against Harlequin Ladies

It was a disappointing day for the Harlequin Ladies at the hands of London Welsh on Sunday’s friendly breaking their unbeaten run in 2006, writes Mel Antao. (London Welsh 29 – Harlequin Ladies 5)

Harlequins received the kick-off but were unable to gain much territory before possession was turned over. Both teams struggled with ball retention due to the adverse weather conditions and poor pitch, but it was London Welsh that were able to make good use of the possession they did have and break through a disorganised Quins side to score.

Quins attempted to fight back but London Welsh challenged hard at the breakdowns, overturning position and making it difficult for them to get clean ball. Harlequins tried to use their kicking game to gain a better field position, but Welsh just returned the kick and made the most of Harlequins’ errors to extend their lead to 0 – 14 by half time.

The second half started to look promising as Quins regained their focus to put together a well executed phase of play to score. However, this didn’t last for long as poor ball retention around the rucks combined with high and missed tackles resulted in a more confident Welsh running in a further three tries.

Harlequin Ladies Captain Jo Everett commented, “Although we were very disappointed to lose, it was an excellent opportunity to blood four new players today. Clearly three consecutive weeks of cancellations and walkovers have softened us. We must be more determined, aggressive and focused at training this week if we are to challenge Blackheath on Sunday”.
