News: Myler Signs On For More At Saints

February 20 2013

Northampton Saints today announced that Stephen Myler has signed a new contract to stay at Franklin's Gardens for the foreseeable future.

Myler's 187 first team appearances is the second highest in the current squad, and the 1,427 points accumulated in his six-and-a-half years at Franklin's Gardens is the third highest in the club's history, just 36 behind second-placed Roger Hosen.

His 100 percent kicking records in the 2009 Amlin Challenge Cup and 2010 LV= Cup finals were crucial in helping the Saints lift both trophies, and he steered the club to knockout victories over Ulster and Perpignan on the run to the 2011 Heineken Cup final. Myler has also had success at national level, too, kicking 18 points in the 2010 Churchill Cup final to underpin England Saxons' successful campaign.

The 28-year-old has spent his entire rugby union career in black, green and gold, and believes that there are bigger and better things on the horizon at Franklin's Gardens.

"I've obviously been here for a while," he said. "I love the club, love the supporters and it's a great group of lads. We've achieved a lot together already and I'm genuinely excited about where the team is going. We've shown a lot of ambition with the calibre of players that will be joining the club next season and Alex King is someone I've also heard only good things about.

"It's a great honour to have played so many games for the Saints. It's a great club. When I first came here from league I wasn't sure how long I'd last in union but I've thoroughly enjoyed my time and that's all down to being involved with this club, the staff, players and of course supporters.

"They made that transition easy for me and it speaks volumes that I'm still here so many years later.

"We have been gradually building momentum over the past few seasons and obviously winning the Challenge Cup and LV= Cup stand out as highlights of my career.

"The Heineken Cup final was another step forward and it showed just how far the club had come in a short space of time and what we are capable of. We've fallen short a couple of times, but the fact that we're now competing those Premiership semi-finals year on year is an indication of how much expectations have risen.

"Clubs are always evolving to be the best and I'm delighted to be a part of that. Hopefully it won't be long before we're lifting that silverware that we all believe we can challenge for."

Director of rugby Jim Mallinder says that Myler is an important member of the Saints squad.

"Time and again Stephen has shown that he is a very good player and someone who we can build the team around," he said. "He has an intelligent approach to the game, and a superb work ethic on and off the field. We're very happy that he has signed a new contract with the Saints."

Not sure this is good news. The fly half issues we have had have been exacerbated by completely polarised opinions on MYler vs A.N.Other. One group of fans devoted to him and never willing to give Geraghty / Lamb any slack (some of Lamby's treatment has been genuinely embarassing at times) and some people completely unconvinced by SM's performances over the last 7 years that he can marshal our troops into the promised land.

Both sets of people have views so ingrained that they aren't going to change - the only way to remove that from the club was to let SM go at the end of his contract.

This isn't an attack on SMs abilities or as a person. He has always done everything to the best of his ability and I am sure he will continue to do so for the forseeable future.

It is however a reflection on what has become the nost divisive issue we have, with the one constant in that issue having been perceptions of SM.

I feel bad for it (because the man himself has nothing to do with it) but I can't help but find this news disheartening.

I would have used this as an oppotunity to draw a line under the issue and try and move the club on.

However, best of luck Stephen. Continue to give your all. I hope my worries about this are confounded and we can all take a step to get over this issue of the mind.

Jim Mallinder said " Stephen went to have a look at Welford Road who offered him second fiddle to Toby Flood once Ford left. He wasnt too keen on that idea and so came back down the M1 and demanded a few extra quid to stay which we were happy to pay as there arent too many spare fly halves around at the moment"

To be honest, Im glad he's staying - good luck Stephen Myler.

So if Lamby is indeed going, who is the No.2 to the new No.1 if a a team is really going to built around him?

Whoever it is I hope they have a thick skin, however they play.

I hope No2 will be either Hooley or one of the previous academy 10s come back to fight for the spot. We've let some reasonable maleable guys go recently who I'm sure with work could have been solid back-up.
I'm glad to see Smyler staying as I think he does have more talent than we have been shown to date his only draw back is his lack of speed and explosive pace but you can't have everything.

You can work on that though - as Mike brown has shown. Why the club hasn't had him working with Margot Wells or someone of that ilk to add that to his game is beyond me.

Don't get me wrong, Brown is still not blistering, but he has added a gear he never had before and become a much better option at club and international level because of it.

Wrench I think we needed to re-sign one or the other as there aren't many good flyhalfs available and it seems most of the AP are "Fly" fishing at the moment. I'm pleased we have put the issue to bed and Stephen can just focus on playing for us for the rest of the season. Ok he may not be the most talented available but at least he's been there and seen it for us.

Ernie I agree, lets get the young lads up to speed, from what Broonie says they have the potential time for the academy to show its worth and lets not forget Kahn can also play 10 pretty well.

What a cracking idea. Let's keep the fans happy by getting rid of BOTH (if rumours of Lamb to Tigs are to be believed) our F/Hs.

Which TWO players should we sign as their replacements?

Good news indeed!

The 10 position is an area that in the UK we (by we I mean all unions) seem to struggle to build strength and as we all know the 9/10 axis is a key area.

Kinga was a good 10 and does anyone seriously believe he wouldn't have any input into 'advice' to our coaches on the renewal?

Well done Stephen.

Interesting to see how Khan influences his play too. having watched the youtube highlights clip he seems a more combative/running SH. This could encourage Steven to play flatter.

Entirely correct move by the club - I would be happy if Myler is firmly established now as the no.1 fly half, and that they bring Hooley up from the academy (is he ready yet) or bring in a seasoned veteran on a retirement plan to act as back up. The academy route would be preferable but if they feel that Hooley isn't quite ready yet, bringing somebody (Andy Goode wouldn't be the end of the world) to act as 2nd choice (a la Barry Everitt) for a year or two would be fine.

Smyler needs to know he has the confidence of the coaches, which I think this demonstrates, and that he has the freedom to play a little without being dropped immediately if he makes a mistake. Hopefully King will be able to teach him some new tricks as well.

I'm hopeful that King will push him on, as that is the way he himself was treated throughout his career.Stephen doesn't need someone mentoring him to calm him down - his default mode is calm enough.

there is little doubt the team will accept him as a leader.

i just hope that's not the only positive news this week , to be honest.

looking around us ,the coaches seriously need to get on the scoreboard.I would not regard last year's recruitment season as any sort of model of anything.

Hi Duncan. Not a case of simply keeping the fans happy but a case of for me removing a stick which fans, pundits, everyone and their nan have been able to use to beat us over the head with for a long time.

We need a clear number one fly half. i am not convinced that saying that a guy who for the last 7 years you haven't trusted with the role is suddenly trsuted with it is going to stop this being a divisive issue, that is my worry. There will still be a lot of sniping at him if he doesn't have a stunning game next season, which isn't healthy.

There are quite a few fly halves moving around at the moment. Mieres looks to be leaving Exeter, and is a guy I really rate. Short term, how about trying to get Alex king to bring Skrela over with him? The Quins model of an experienced international with a youngster as back up works very well - could have been replicated here.

All I am saying is we had options (including our entire supporter base behaving like we used to and not carrying pre conceived notions about players into how we get behind them before, during and after match day.)

As I said, it's not about the individual, but the cloud he lives in here. I hope that saying we will build a team around him is enough to lift that cloud, but I have my doubts.

I don't really care if it's seen as a stick for others. Smyler has helped steer us to an HC final amongst other things so can't be too shabby. Although I do agree it would be nice if people stopped bickering about two different players in the same position.

For the record I don't have a great problem with either of our FHs. I think they both have differing talents. That said, it would appear that Lamb IS off the menu winking smiley So to get rid of Smyler too would be foolhardy in the extreme. We would then need to recruit two top flight replacements and deal with the associated disruption (what price fans, pundits and grannies using that as a stick to beat the coaching team?). Even with the movements at the moment who is actually available?

Ford? Rumoured to Barf and a work in progress.
Goode? Could do a job, but not "the future". Useful back-up
Mieres? Good player but has already signed for Wuss
Barkley? Not seen him play for a while. Could be useful?

The idea of Skrela coming over with Kinga is a nice one. That's assuming he could be tempted. The re-signing of Smyler doesn't preclude that either.

All-in-all I think it's a very good bit of business by the club. I look forward to seeing how things go next year with Kinga and the new players arriving

For me it's a toss up between the consistency of a retained fly half or the predictability of a retained fly half. I'll let others who know the lad better decide which is best for Saints.

In the brief snippets on the ITV highlights last weekend you saw what a young match fit Henson gave a side. Obviously, he had, still has, massive range in his kicking both at goal and in open field. He was also a solid defender but his greatest talent was always in his passing. That came out in the scoring pass he delivered for LWelsh's try, I had to rerun it just to confirm it was so well disguised. Another pass almost led to another try, very heavy traffic and out of nowhere a LWelsh player breaks through having received such a well timed pass from Henson, one of the best passers of the ball in the 6N. Its not just me, even the Guardian reporter who was at the match mentioned his passing skills.

Moving the topic slightly sideways for a moment, do we overestimate the importance of the no. 10 to the way the team functions as a whole ? Put another way, would the team's general modus operandi work irrespective of the no. 10's style or does everything have to fit around him ?

Again thanks for that Eif.

I had stupidly forgotten what a top quality player Henson has been over the last few seasons and his consistency every week has been remarkable ..... oh hang on a minute he has hardly played and been disruptive pretty much everywhere he has been. Give it a little more time at L Welsh I think.
Still, we are of course all entitled to our opinion : just a shame that yours always has a Welsh bias and in this case is based on one game !!!

Tedge,
I always believed that the attacking axis of the team is 8,9 and 10 and you build it aorund 1 of those positons.
Seeing as we have Chaka Khan on his way then I assume his performance will be the basis of that style.

10 usually calls the plays once its clear they will be getting clean ball from the forwards; often 2 or 3 phases in advance. However in open play then its down to his split second decision OR specific training ground moves built around scenarios.

12 will often call the defensive patterns but its not written in stone these days.

hear hear Andy. I wonder just when some people will realise that rugby players are human beings and deserve to be treated as such. Before they commit some things to print perhaps they could consider how they might feel to read the same about themselves before doing so.

And. as an aside. Why is it that it is usually those with nothing good to say who choose to believe they are being silenced when someone disagrees with them ?

Just thought I'd mention that last week the very nice driver on the Driving Creek narrow gauge railway in Coromandel (on seeing my Saints T Shirt) gave a pretty good resume of our "problem"s at 10. He was a keen Blues and North Harbour fan so I thanked him for Andy Blowers and Sharky - he wondered why we had "missed out" on Nick Evans and I guess this raises the old chestnut of what we would have won with him in the side?

Good news for us and Stephen. What Saints have proved over the years is that we can play winning and exciting rugby with SM in the 10 role. We have proved we can score tries around the old SM and JD axis. Trouble is we don't have Flash and nor do we have a fit Ben nor of course JD. That is a key area to solve for next year and with it Steve can continue to prosper.

That said I am sorry for Ryan. But the present dilemma couldn't continue and perhaps Steve has got his head down more.

And we know we will be signing a new 10. Please don't expect Hooley to fill the role though. Give him time to learn and develop his game.

You can't win everything with one good player. We have had numerous problems with the lack of backs coach, out of form players in the backs, struggling to replace gameplans/players of the likes of Wilson, Downey and Ashton. Our failure to win has not just been down to the fly half. Fly half is an easy target as it is an exposed position. Like Emile Heskey in football, a striker who didnt score goals but did alot of unseen work.

And. as an aside. Why is it that it is usually those with nothing good to say who choose to believe they are being silenced when someone disagrees with them ?
