Oof, major signing! Top job by the club.

So, with North signing, that guarantees us the Scarlets in the HC next year.
Mujati and Tonga'uiha signing for Racing Metro guarantees them in our group.

Who else do we get?

Fantastic! Had more or less given up! Now looks like the hold-up was the Saints/Scarlets negotiations, not Saints/George.

Congratulations to Saints management for staying quiet and dignified throughout all the hullabaloo. And, dare I say it, to the occasionally maligned financial side of the club for getting us in the position to fund such a deal without (I hope) breaking the bank.

Apologies for the shameless plug, but in case you're interested, we'll have the thoughts of Leon Barwell, Ben Foden, Stephen Myler, Allan Robson and, in the studio, Ian Hunter on the George North signing on BBC Radio, ahem, Noddy tomorrow morning between 7 and 9.

If Foden is driving in at early o'clock from Hertfordshire to talk about North's signing, it sounds like the players are also impressed by the calibre of the signing.

Is there a podcast of this radio show as I won't be able to tune in?

All this euphoria is understandable, but am I the only one that hasn't seen a comment from Mr North saying how much he is looking forward to playing for the Saints, they are a great club and there is something special happening there, etc?

Should I/we be concerned?

The best comment from George N was his signature at the bottom of a contract. Marketing words produced for consumption by the great unwashed (i.e. us) are in reality irrelevant.

Six Nations - 5 games, 2 off weeks in the middle and one or two weeks beforehand - missing for 8-9 games.

Autumn internationals - 3 official games, plus potentially an extra one that Wales organise outside the IRB window, and a week or two before - missing for 4-6 games.

So George will be unavailable for 12-15 out of our 22 AP games. I expect he will be available for all HC games and any AP playoffs.

Again this is not a negative post

but over the three years we could be looking at only 35-40 games for Mr North ....and that is if he is not injured.

This would cost around £775k - £250 buyout and I'm guessing around £175k a year wages.

Of course he may bring in some extra cash via supporters and he may well be the difference in some close games compared to some of our current wingers.

Still it does look like an expensive deal.......if he gets long term injured it will be pretty bad

But I'm very happy to be positive about and believe it will be all good

Re: News: Scarlets confirm North departure to Saints
Posted by: wheely (IP Logged)
Date: 10/04/2013 10:01

Yeah yeah, and any player could get injured. Fodes, Hartley, Woods, Lawes et al will all be on similar contracts, with similar timeframes allocated to International duties and rest weekends.

Maybe we should just hire a squad of cheap as chips, journeymen foreigners, who turn out, week in, week out, with no ambition or talent to get them into international squads.

Damned if you do...damned if you dont.

Re: News: Scarlets confirm North departure to Saints
Posted by: jimmies (IP Logged)
Date: 10/04/2013 10:35

Wheely,

I'm certainly happy we went for it and got it - the guy is top notch !!

With the comparison to Fodes, Lawes etc ....we will probably have them for more games and we didn't pony up £250k to get them.....If you believe the reported figure.

In this case I don't believe we are "damned if you do".....I think we are ALL very happy with this signing....but I still like to run the figures to get a fuller picture. This club makes profit every year, but it is only a small profit and the money from buying out George is around the same as 3 years profit for the Saint PLC.... if I remember correctly

Re: News: Scarlets confirm North departure to Saints
Posted by: St Owen (IP Logged)
Date: 10/04/2013 11:05

I don't believe the reported figure. Not at all.

I suspect North's first game to be a sell out, just a shame we haven't got a few more seats to sell over and above our current capacity.

Agreed St Owen

I really believe that North on the wing will give the midfield more space/time and Fodes and Pisi will really benefit. If the new guy from NZ turns out good, then the oppositions defense is going to have alot to watch out for

The LV= games are played in those periods as well though. Plus - Northampton wont be obliged to release him for the weekend before international periods. That's just a deal between England and the Premiership.

It's more like 6 or 7 league games he'll miss for you I think.

Well, at least that's settled but this North fella is going to have to change when he gets to FG.

I mean, we'll have to stop him passing of his left hand and also ensure that he adapts his running style to cope with the precipitous slope at the Gardens.

And he'll need to go on a language course to start to speak Nuffampton as well as getting reaquainted with Norrrfok from whence he comes!

We shouldn't assume that. If I were North I would have had that written into my contract.

The WRU have been pretty vocal about it and I wouldn't want to jeopardise my chances of selection (although that be mad not to select him on current form, even if he isn't available one-week prior).

Welcome St George.

It's been a while since a signing has caused so much excitement. Can't wait to see him teaming up with Pisi, Foden and others.

Along with you tambourineman, I was hoping for a statement from George, but thinking about it, with all the squabbling that's gone on between the Scarlets and the Welsh Rugby Union it's probably better for him to keep his head down and not stir the pot. I think he's in a difficult situation trying to please lots of different people so perhaps stum, is the best policy.

Well Stockers, your diatribe on the Thatcher thread threatened all sorts of sanctions, your diatribe on this thread is even worse so also deserves sanction. I do wonder if you actually watch any rugby matches or are you trying to make so much noise that it distracts you from watching an actual game. I suppose its quite quaint and original in this professional era to have a ground with a significant slope but there are other more telling issues as to why North has chosen the wrong club.

Not sure why you just reposted it Dragon?

Yes it was a little jibe at Eif who constantly complains no one in the Saints squad can pass off his left hand and that the slope is a huge issue. It was not particularly nasty or pointed and was definitely not a diatribe. I am sure if the signature posting was not from Wales and especially Scarlets then nothing would have been said.

In your opinion. Which you are entitled to.

I found it humorous and entirely inoffensive.

To be honest dragon, no offense, but I think Eif is big enough and ugly enough (turn of phrase, before I am lambasted for poor form) to fight his own battles. He gives as much as he takes and when he deliberately posts antagonistic utterances he should expect some flak to be returned.

Tell me, have you ever come across another poster that returns to this board time after time, goes to Saints games regularly, but never, ever, EVER, has a positive word to say about the Saints? Eif knows full well what he is doing. Yes it gets a rise out of some of us and we get a rise out of him too. It's part and parcel of internet message-boards. Rant over.

Once again, delighted to have George join us - I'm sure he will make an excellent addition.

That is the thing about humour Dragon - it is a personal thing.

To me attempts at humour that are obscene as practiced by a lot of the avant garde comedians is not funny. I don't mind the odd swear word but... I speak there as someone who has spent a time at the Edinburgh Fringe.

This was not that.

Sorry if it was not to your taste. It wasn't necessarily to my taste either but it broke non of our rules. I do not moderate this forum by what I do and do not find funny - it would be a sad day if we got to that.

Well matey, I managed to get a reaction from Eif, (which in itself is unusual) who had been distinctly uncommunicative on North's signing by Saints and he of course had to end on a bitter anti Saints note.

As for your own comments, you've only been reading this board for under 12 months and the long history of Eif's antagonism is clearly lost on you. I believe that the community here have made you very welcome but I'm not prepared to be told what I can and can't edit/post as long as I follow the rules we set, ie it relates to rugby, supports Saints and isn't rude.

We can talk about it further on Sunday face to face over a pint at the Kassam if you like.

The slope and passing off the left hand are now solid gold institutions of this board. I think it was Jim Mallinder's post match interview against Irish when he noted that we found it easier in the second half because we were playing downhill. He then went on to say that Wilson was not very happy that Elliot received all the passes (he scored 3 tries that day) alluding to not passing off the left hand.

We could sign them all and none of them would be the right one.

However, Tusi Pisi is playing in Wellington, New Zealand.

Stockers -old chap - does anyone willingly admit to coming from Norfolk ?

Otherwise a great signing and to my way of thinking a sign that someone at the club is looking beyond the small town limited ambition scenario and saying

" we are the Saints and we are going to go for it."

Cant wait for next season

Back in the early 2000's I used to get up on a Saturday morning to watch a comedy sketch programme called this morning with Richard not Judy. I didn't get the humour initially, but watching the show week after week, I realised that the humour was generally based upon themes which re-occurred over the course of the series. By the end of the series I was gutted that it was over just as I was 'getting it'.

Like Eif, I've been known to make the odd outrageous comment, only for it to comeback and bite me hard on the bum! I've also been (as I've come to expect) hammered by friends, as I would do to them in the same situation.

Whilst I dont partake in mickey taking banter on here (I don't feel that i know people well enough) I think(& hope)that Eif enjoys the banter, as he certainly doesn't let it deter him from posting what he thinks (some of which, I'm sure is done to reel in the locals that are more than happy to bite).

Anyhow, what do you think of our new signing Mr Dragon, and how do you best feel that we will utilise him?

I think that we may see our other wingers profit from having his class in the back three. Bit more space for our other George too. Also have you seen Jimmy Wilson play at 10- 12? When we signed him, mY friend who lives in NZ said that he watched him play there regular for southland, and that he was a class 10 (hence my continued insistance we ought to try him there; at least once!) also Having seen him put boot to ball, I cannot for the life of me understand why we let Smyler take pen kicks to touch; the distance each gets is incomparable to the other.

Thanks Rubadubdub, I've already said on another thread that I'm very much in favour of him experiencing a new club in a different league away from his Welsh comfort zone. Having had my son make the same move, I would urge George to enjoy his time in Northampton and to always give of his best.
It's only right that the Saints supporters celebrate this move it's a fantastic coup but I would also remind them that down here the feeling is very different in that we are losing another one of our young stars because our Union and Regions are constantly fighting each other for control.
George like Shane before him is at his best when he can come looking for the ball rather than stay gathering dust out on the wing.
I've also seen James Wilson @10 several times, I hope they give him a run there next season.

It is a sad state of affairs isn't it?

On the one hand I'm chuffed to billy oh we've got him, but can't help but feel we've opened Pandora's box by paying a transfer fee; what happens when the French clubs come looking to poach our biggest and best with their huge treasure chests?

I honestly think that the problem is not just a welsh one; for me the salary cap needs to be equal across the whole of Europe, wouldn't hurt to have a financial fair play concept a la European association football. Being a cricket fan to I can understand the reluctance of the regional sides to go the central contract route.

Rubadubdub, we're not the first to use a transfer fee though are we.

Ben Morgan is the obvious recent one (because of the relative similarities of his situation) but it's been going on for a few seasons now.

St Owen Did you mean by the relative similarities was that Ben Morgan was also at the Scarlets? Buying out contracts is on the increase mainly by the French.
Makes me wonder why bother with contracts in the first place.

If they weren't under contract, then they'd leave for nothing rather than the club getting paid for the remainder of the term.

On a tangent, rubadub - I also recall TMWRNJ, in fact I got tickets to go and see an episode being recorded, only to turn up and find out they oversold the venue and we were too late to get in...

I was thinking more from the players perspective when the club can sell them to another club regardless of contract.

I would love to know how the amount of any "transfer fee", if that's what it is, might be calculated. Clearly Scarlets will not have to pay North's salary next season so they will save money, even if they sign a replacement he'd probably be on a lower salary than North. So Saints are "compensating" Scarlets for the loss of North's services for 12 months - where on earth do you start the bidding ?

I feel the difference is that Ben Morgan wanted the move to be available for england meet ups, training etc.

North, was arguably the jewel in the crown for the scarlets and seemingly happy there. We've offered money to the club and the player, which scarlets just couldn't turn down or compete with respectively. Make no bones about it, had he not turned down a move to France we would have then been in a position where we couldn't compete with any transfer fee or wages a French team could offer.

I suppose what I'm saying is that we have reinforced the fact that does every player have their price, and so do the clubs. Consequently whilst there is disparity between the different countries salary caps, the countries with the larger caps, should they choose to do so, could have the pick of any player, at any time. Especially if the team being raided is in financial doo doo!

I'll ignore most of that nonsense but I do "actually" watch plenty of rugby, both live and on TV. However I try to balance that interest with all sorts of other professional and sporting interests....and real life.

Bri, Newcastle did it first with Tuigamala from Wigan and Scotty Quinnell went to Richmond around the same time...

Tubby, I remember TMWRNJ with fond memories.

Facing facts it's quite clear the Welsh have pretty much reached the end of their financial tether. Letting Morgan go last year no one gave two hoots once it became clear he was English again. But when North and Faletau are being punted around as they have been it tells us all we need to know.

And with Roberts & Lydiate off to Metro
[www.bbc.co.uk]
there seems no end to the exodus.

As I mentioned on another thread the market is evolving but the wages of players continues to rise and rise. Hence the desire from many sides to find a few likely lads from the islands again.

It goes in cycles, not quite so frequently as the Barclays premiership that sees a sharp rise in wages every 4 year, but even with the Wales excellent crop of youngsters and to their credit always been given a chance (for example Wales have ready made replacements for Adam Jones and Ian Evans in Samson Lee and Andrew Coombs) but simply do not seem able to cope any more.

Eif and Dragon can stamp their feet all they like North is coming here and he wont be the last. But I think we all need to be genuinely worried for Wales and the franchises. They are not sustainable.

from the link i posted was this comment:

Quote:
RugbyDragon says
Dwindling gates are to due to pointless fixtures, with players being wrapped in cotton wool. When amateur, there used to be a midweek game.Players could expect to play 30+ games a year.Traditional fixtures such as Neath/Aberavon full-blooded, Maesteg/Bridgend.This used to be the highlight of supporters easter/boxing day. What do you have now? JUDGEMENT day?38K in one stadium?Yet no passion!!

Without wishing to want to get into an 'our leagues better than your league' debate Welsh rugby (and football) supporters are as fickle as you will find, despite being unquestionably some of the most passionate and vociferous.

As an example take a look at this video from the other night...

Wrestlemania the night before stunk. The crowd was cold and wet and very pee'd off. Raw the following night was 3 hours of madness all started by 12 lads who had gone over for a long weekend to take in the show and the episode of Raw that followed. They chanted and sang all night and enthused the rest of the audience to do the same.

The 12 lads were all from Cardiff...

...And that theme tune is now in the UK top 20.

A bizarre example of passion I will grant you.

Sadly, the Welsh have a history of voting with their feet and it seem as though they always will. So the only way they will compete/survive/build is to come over the border and play with us, some passionate battles like the bad old days of amateurism giving them (and us) some matches they can get their teeth into and matches that really matter. I don't know about anyone else but I really don't see any other choice.

One genuine question I do have is this.

Scotland haemorrhage players more than most especially to France and you don't hear them complaining anywhere near as much as the Welsh. Why?

Re: News: Scarlets confirm North departure to Saints

I guess the Scots are pretty pragmatic when it comes to money and in any case professional rugby in Scotland must be hanging on by the skin of its teeth; it was probably never viable to begin with so I expect most Scots realise that and are philosophical about it.

I've not had the pleasure of meeting anyone in the Northampton community, I live in Bristol and I'm not sure why you felt that was important when posting.

dragon 27, where I come from, matey is a term of endearment but never mind. When I said "community", I meant this online community.

The daftest thing about Eif's response and your own intervention is that I was giving a backhanded compliment to George North, a fine player no doubt, for whom the club will have to move up a gear based on our recent performances to get the best out of his skills. Perhaps it was excessively subtle of me?

And you don't often get the offer of a pint from a Scot so you really are missing out.

No more from me on this.
