Supporters Liaison Group - representation

By COYS Ltd Directors
August 11 2013

As you will all know, ComeOnYouSaints.Com has been asked to put forward up to 3 members of The Saints Supporters' Liaison  group. This is an experiment, and is aimed at creating a dialogue between the club and it's supporters. It is anticipated that supporter representation will come from the membership of the SSC, COYS, Season Ticket Holders and Corporate sponsors.

Supporters Liaison Group

The board sponsor is Ella Bevan and it will be led by her, assisted by Brian Facer and Chris Wearmouth on behalf of the club management team. This group is NOT a decision making body, but is designed to provide advice and be a sounding board on issues that the constituent members will bring forward. (For instance the whole subject of Association Membership is one area that we could see being a topic for discussion). The group will meet 3 times a year, and will feed into the proposed Season Ticket Forum, which it is intended will meet twice a year. Being a season ticket holder is NOT a prerequisite for membership of this group. The scope of the group's discussions is expected to cover all off-field activity, including pre and post match events, away trips, visiting supportersexperiences and community events. It is intended that initially the term of representation will be 12 months.

The COYS representation will be from members of the COYS message board on Sportnetwork, with at least 3 months standing. If you wish to nominate yourself for election, please send a mail to slg@comeonyousaints.com with the following:

Name

Board Name

No more than 100 words outlining what you believe you could bring to the SLG on behalf of COYS and supporters in general.

Closing date for nominations  is 31st August 2013, and the election will run for 2 weeks at the beginning of September, and the first meeting is expected to be at the end of September.

Sitting here in the wilds of 'Eifville' and contemplating my bump, a couple or so questions re the Liason Group representation if I may?

1. Will the restriction on minimum 3 months membership of COYSDC not restrict applicants from new members, who joined after the demise of the Offy Forum who may feel they could offer something special?

2. Will applicants 'manifestos' be published with their applications on the board?

3. Will the Editors apply any form of veto to applicants who they consider would not be the most desirable representative of COYSDC, or will all applicants be treated equally and be on the ballot paper?

Thanks in advance.

1. Fair point but the posting history does allow people to form a rounded view and not just on the manifesto.

2. I fully expect so - how else do people know who to vote for.

3. I cannot think of a reason why we would.

The people are to represent supporters not COYS

What Tim Said
Maybe some further discussion around point 1, but it was really to prevent anyone just signing up for this opportunity - (to put a boundary in really!) - not that it is too much of a problem.

I understand the nomination is for one Mr.Robert Mugabe

So will probably need a recount, unless Mr. V Putin puts his name forward too.

As someone who is a regular poster on COYSDC and who is also involved in SFO, have you considered putting yourself forward, Elma?

(of course, the one nomination could be you!)

This process is flawed -lets call for open nominations and then let us know on this thread who is nominated as the nominations occur.

Amazing !
There is always someone who can do the job better. The nominations will go up on a separate page, when this editor gets round to it.
And tambourineman, as someone with friends who have suffered at the hands of that monster, I find your remark quite tasteless.

No offence meant from me St M, I was simply pointing that not many seem to be interested in taking on the position, sounds like it would be a pretty thankless task to me.

Phil, as you probably know someone on SFO has already suggested that idea. The more I think about it the less appealing it becomes. Firstly I'm not sure I could offer as much as some of the other, shall we say "more forceful" personalities on either site. Secondly, after the latest incidents of closing the iffy (great autocorrect there) and changing the AM to the new Saints Nation Membership I'm really not convinced the club are going to or
take any suggestions from supporters seriously. I hope
I'm wrong on this but the feeling of disconnection between supporter and club has probably increased in the last month if I'm any judge which ironically makes this role even more important I just don't think the club believes this. Sorry.

Well, this isn't much fun is it?

If anyone else out there is thinking of putting their name forward, some of the posts above will probably have put them off. A bit of support would be nice for this initiative.

Rest assured that if the Club doesn't pay sufficient heed to the input from the SLG it won't last very long as we won't be able to support its continuance. However, if it does work, great and maybe, just maybe, in future years it will be seen as a "Good Idea"

So, let's at least try it. No one will be injured if it doesn't work but if/when it does, happy days.

This all makes me very sad indeed. This is hardly representative of the supporters group as a whole.

What a difference between what we believed Leon to be saying and how it has turned out.

Can anyone point to any developments over the recent past that have actually followed a line described by "unhappy" supporters?

On visiting the offy yesterday, I was struck by the overwhelming number of negative comments and the banal responses being tripped out.

I have to say that I am closer than I have ever been, of turning my back on Saints

I quite agree that they can be viewed as negative and I also agree that trying something is better than trying nothing. I was however expressing my personal reasons for not putting myself forwards as Phil asked. I'm not decrying the initiative in the least and good luck to it,I hope I am proved wrong by the club and whoever is nominated to represent the supporters. Please ignore my cynicism.

Longers,

The initiative championed by Leon is very, very important in my view hence why this group is important and should be supported.

The recent change in Associate Membership status is a classic example of why the SLG is needed.

OK I was wrong to criticise and I apologise - its just that I would have done things a bit differently

On reflection I now recognise just what a hard task the Eds have in getting any head of steam up on this one.

So may I whole heartedly endorse and support Stockers sentiments above .

This is important and we do need to back up the moans and groans so often voiced on this board with a tangible presence at the only table that has been offered.

Let this opportunity slip through apathy or cynicism and we probably will not get anotherrone.

Therefore get off your bums and get nominating - pm people who you might want to suggest.

It isn't contrary to some expectations I have heard
inevitable that " The usual suspects " will fill the slots.

I am not a candidate and will not be one - but I do have a good one in mind and we are close to putting his name forward.

Don't wait and see - get on to to it

Longers,

The recent change in Associate Membership status is a classic example of why the SLG is needed.

Stockers - I agree, the AM issue is indicative of what is wrong at present. Little apparent logic to it, and the inevitable question - "Who actually benefits".

I am trying to be very careful in employing Leon's name in my arguments, because we can only guess at what he might have made of what is happening, but I for one, did not foresee the contact group being so "tight". But who is making the structural decisions?

I do not believe for one moment, that Ella Bevan has had anything to do with any of these issues. But again, here is the rub, and why I am so dispirited. Just what do the club think 3 meetings a year, talking to Mrs Bevan, Brain Facer and Chris Wearmouth, will actually achieve? What is the brief?

I am extremely fed up - I wrote to the board to make my views known - C/O Sue Hewitt.
I got not so much as an acknowledgement. So I can't say whether my complaint reached the board or not. What the heck is she paid to do?
I got a reply from some faceless entity eventually through Facebook, telling me that I should have written to Brian Facer, since he was on the board. Not according to my web page, I replied. Silence from then on.

Then we have the fiasco of the beer running out on sevens night. Again, look at the replies from the club. Goodness me, we've been complaining about the bars and service since the beginning of last season. You cannot blame anyone who wonders if the club actually give a t*ss!

If truth be known, I think the process has been damned, but not because of the attitude of the supporters, but by the incompetent way in which it has been presented.

I suppose that depends on two things - the desire of both parties to make it work.

It isn't a moan forum (some would say that is what this forum is for) but then your topics are way above moans - as was Howlin's original post that started the whole ball rolling.

I'd consider putting myself forward but despite the large number of posts I "post", no-one knows me as despite hardly missing a home game for about 5 years and doing a good few away ones too I've been pretty outspoken on here in the past.

I hope those selected consider themselves privileged and at least try to make a difference for fans who, like me, part with much hard earned cash to follow the Saints.

Our views are key and we need objective rational posters to verbalise them to the club.

We need people to put themselves forward.

Smitz, as I understand it it's not so much about your own views as about if you would be able to put a case across for the supporters as a body. If you think you could be a good mouthpiece and (as important) a good listener and believe you could do a job then put your name down and good luck to you.

Agree with what Elma says, I think too that whoever goes forward will have to be careful that they are not seen by the hoi polloi as 'brown nosing' to Mrs Bevan et al,nor are they seen by the Saints Board members as being particularly bolshie. A difficult line to tread. Certainly one I personally could not step on.

Tim, you ask the question "Will it?" but then put two dependencies on the result.

For more seasons - at least three - than is reasonable(to me) the supporters have been hammering on about certain changes.

I know that some were more hare brained than others, but common threads began to emerge. Whether it was as basic as the Village, content, price etc, whoo plays No 10(!!!) or Dylan as captain. They've all held sway at some point or other.

Three seasons on, and just what has the club done? Well nothing really.
They have offered to listen to supporters through a committee. Weren't they listening before?

They elected to speak to all supporters through a relatively narrow communication stream, but key in this was the closure of the Official website forum and the decision by someone to have Ella Bevan and Chris Wearmouth use just one forum as a mouthpiece to all malcontents including those who until then had resided on the Offy site alone.

Without apparent reason, they laid down a set of qualifying criteria of who could be put forward and who couldn't. The fit seemed inappropriately convenient for a select section of the membership - I know I'm a conspiracy theorist!

We all have a good idea about the characters on our own "favourite" sites, and that would have given us some idea of who we might like to act as our mouthpiece. But now? Divide and conquer. Well done Saints.

The thing I find most offensive, is the way in which the new site bangs on about the Saints Nation. Proud Saints. Love Northampton.

The management(board?) have done more in the last few months to lose support than to gain it. They should remember that we supporters rarely travel alone. We rarely just turn up for the game. We arrive early, with our party, have a drink or three, a bite to eat etc. etc. They have decided in their wisdom, to risk much more than the one or two supporters who may fall by the wayside. Did they not notice the falling gate attendances last season? Do they think a few foreign imports, albeit expensive and tempting ones, will cause us to rush back?

They have a great deal of rebuilding to do, both on and off the field, and this is not the way to build the foundations of that rebuilding programme.

Wish I had never aired my questions however

I agree with a lot of what has been said above and on a personal note I queried whether the club sent out a reminder if you had not renewed your season ticket. Mr Hoddle suggested I contacted the Ticket Office. However this was not really my point' 'Hugh'and I are now an item ( I blame the beer and C Block!) and an addition is expected in the new year. We decided not to renew due to my situation and although we have held season tickets between us for many years I would have thought at least a reminder in the form of an email might have been nice?

Longers, did the club lay down the criteria? I thought it was the Eds here. Ok I know they club specified coys or SSC membership but I thought the rest was decided by COYSDC management. Appologies if I got this wrong Eds.

If it was a Coys decision maybe changing the 3 month membership requirement could be reviewed to encourage more applicants.

It was my decision, run past the COYS board.
The reasoning is to prevent (without going through and blackballing nominations - which of course is what some would expect!!) some of the nastier trolls whom we have fought hard to remove from the board, but who readmit themselves on a fairly regular basis. Perhaps some discretion could be given, but that would lead us open to charges of gerrymandering, and I am not sure the eds want that.

We believe this is important - and yes Pete, it may be flawed, and you may have done it differently, but it is the first time we have attempted anything like this and this board is the only place where there is an offer of election of interested candidates. We may get it wrong first time round - we are not paragons, but if the SLG is a success, we will be able to improve the process.

Forgive my cynicism but if you were a member of the Saints board would you really encourage any process which in any way might pose a threat to your cosy life ? You are a member of the board of a successful rugby club (defined as one which has a team regularly in the top 4 of its league, has a good HC cup record, pretty much sells out most home matches, has a solid STH base and makes a profit year on year).

Yes you do contribute energetically and mostly efficiently to the running of the club but You also enjoy privileges, reflected glories and a match day lifestyle out of reach to the masses. Why would you enthuse about a potential change to the status quo when you suspect, probably correctly, that a minority is making waves whilst the majority keeps happily paying up to watch their team and as long as the team does well who cares about anything else ?

I like underlining and it really does serve to emphasise the point.

You're right, it's my opinion, neither right nor wrong.

It's also my opinion that you seek to justify your actions. Why might that be? Are you having second thoughts?

But I do like the GBS quote. I think it fits nicely....make it. Of course, that assumes access to the tools required....

Your opinion is misleading you
I merely try and set to the rationale behind my actions.

Be aware that this not a "message board" in the way that the old offy was or SFO is.

It is a not for profit limited company in the business of news . Therefore some of the actions we take will not necessarily be understood by members of other message boards, as we are differently constituted.
As a Vice Admiral advised me - "David - this is not a democracy" - is true of this site too.

The First 2 Candidates Introductory statements are at the top of the message board.
It is NOT a thread, you will not be able to comment there.

As new candidates come forward, their details will be added. The voting will open in the 1st week of September.

Should either Elma Fudd or Smitzferbrains decide to put themselves forward I would second them gladly.

You can't get anywhere unless you try.

There is some confusion in some posts here.

If I may please.

Boards do not run businesses- they determine policy and hire and fire the CEO.

Management run businesses lead by the CEO.

The test for me on this was very simple. Would the CEO attend the three meetings a year to hear the views of his fans / customers?

If he didn't he would send a signal that he wasn't interested in their views. If he did it would show he was interested.

And that dear readers is the Saints club/ supporters problem in a nutshell.

No, but if one of his Board Directors did (and in this case probably 2)

I think our CEO pays only lip service to supporter issues. I suspect that, given the replacements coming onto the Board this is a situation that will not continue.
The E in CEO is executive. I would rather speak with the Chairman who usually carries more weight, but not necessarily in the sense of Elephants mating (Very heavy done at a high level accompanied by a lot of noise).

Personally I think that St Marlowe is far and away the only person who could truly represent the views of all on here. He is an Editor and (I presume) a shareholder in COYSDC and a leading light in the SSC. He appears to me to be the first to defend the ordinary supporter and to attack the club hierarchy when they forget that.

Post your manifesto, Sir!

It doesn't matter what a chairman or board member does if the CEO doesn't like his customers. Its the CEO who runs the management of all the services that interface with fans.

I've just paid nearly £4 a pint for thin lager and nearly a fiver each for a roll with a sausage in it. I expect to pay that at Twickenham or in the West End. Not in a rugby football club in Northampton.

And our seats -at nearly £600 quid each -were so filthy we had to clean them befoe we could sit in them.

I paid £5 for a book thinking it was a programme -it wasn't it was a lot of advertising and a small amount of content.

I just paid out around £35 this evening in addition to the seat costs -at a friendly. I am being ripped off. And the guy running it doesn't want to talk to the customers.

Gwendoline,

Come join us on the terrace. I paid less than half of £600 and I don't need to clean my tiny patch of concrete. Don't drink because once you leave to go to the loo you'll soon regret it!

Had you only just notice programmes are a rip off? We have been complaining about "the new food outlets" for over a season now. Eat elsewhere is my advice. Don't give them the choice, you choose. If you choose Saints for food and drink, well incorrect choice IMHO.

I think it's good value to be honest. Less than £300 for a ST and no other "in ground" spending. The CEO can..........

You are absolutely right. But when are our Board members going to realise we support this club in spite of the efforts of the CEO to drive us all out of the place. He is getting a free commercial ride on the back of a super club, super team and super coaches. Take those away and his commercial approach would empty the place in five minutes.

This thread seems to have been hijacked by those calling for the removal of Allan Robson.

'Deja vu' from earlier this year?

Leave the guy alone,if he is originally a football man, so what? If his dichotomy makes money and supplies silverware, great.

Nothing to do with Football.

Its about communication, which hopefully would be addressed by the title of this thread

Good grief! The threads above are exactly the reason a liaison group is required. If remit of said group and influence is a potential issue these should be the first challenges brought up at the first meeting. Without confidence in the process there is none and the group will disappear very quickly.

The liaison group should provide a consensus of opinion across a wide range of supporters and not random one off complaints to someone or other who may or may not be on the board. If they reacted to every mail received we would be in a right mess. That's not to say they are without merit but on their own they are one (or a few) supporter having a whinge. If 10K season ticket holders all complained about a subject you can bet someone would stand up and take notice.

So the group should put forward genuine issues that are troubling the masses not the minority and filter out any hard brained ideas or general whingeing. No doubt I'll get shot down in flames but if we don't give it a go we'll never know

Exactly - It is sometimes difficult to grasp that this is about all the supporters, not just this site (which is where one would expect to find gripes and moans). We all know that there are issues to be faced, this site is a place for airing them, not solving them. That is why NONE OF THE COYSD BOARD MEMBERS will be standing for this Liaison group.

We, along with the SSC, have been asked to find volunteers, - our view is very firmly that this is an opportunity to widen the influence base, and are acting accordingly.

I look forward to receiving your Nomination Walks!

To those who encouraged me to stand, I thank you. Perhaps next time for me. I'd like to see how this whole thing develops.

To those who think this whole idea is futile and won't change anything, you're wrong. It may not immediately but we all have to keep trying and little by little things may change. Saints are nothing, literally nothing, without supporters, fans. We can, and must, continue to try and communicate with the club as best we can to make a difference.
