News: 7 New Re-Signings at Saints
By COYS
December 17 2014
It's that time of year when rumour and speculation abounds. Traditionally, just in time for the festive season, Saints starts to announce. First the initiial Re-Signings, followed by new arrivals. Any departures are left to the player and any new club to announce. So here we go - the festive season starts here.

Northampton Saints has today announced new contracts with seven of the club’s players.Leading the way is club captain Dylan Hartley. The 28-year-old is the longest-serving player at Franklin’s Gardens joining the club in 2005. He was named club captain in 2009, and as well as amassing 198 first team appearances he has lifted the Aviva Premiership trophy and skippered the Saints to the 2011 Heineken Cup final. He is also the most capped player in the current England squad, having played 61 times in the white shirt. Courtney Lawes has also put pen to paper on a new deal. The 25-year-old home-grown lock made his Saints debut in October 2007, but sprang to prominence with man of the match performances in the European Challenge Cup and Heineken Cup in 2008 and 2009. A Junior World Championship finalist in 2009, Lawes made his full international debut in that year’s Autumn Internationals and has gone to play 36 times for England and 148 times for the Saints, winning plenty of plaudits for his athleticism and effective play in the process. Over the past few years Calum Clark has become one of the most effective and consistent back rowers anywhere in the Aviva Premiership. The Saints’ Player of the Month in October 2014, Clark (25) was named the club’s Young Player of the Season in his first year at Franklin’s Gardens. A former England Under-20 captain in the Junior World Championship final, Clark skippered England Saxons in 2014 and this Autumn was called into England’s training squad. He has played 119 times for the Saints. Alex Waller’s new contract comes at the end of a dream year for the 24-year-old prop. Not only did he score the winning try in the Aviva Premiership final, but he also made his first ever national representative appearance, playing for England Saxons against Irish Wolfhounds and Scotland ‘A’. This was followed by a place on the plane to New Zealand as part of England’s touring squad, for whom he impressed while playing against the Crusaders. Kettering born, Waller is a graduate of the Saints Academy system and has played 139 times in black, green and gold. Waller’s younger brother, Ethan, continues his place among the Saints’ propping corps with his own new deal. The 22-year-old’s progress over the past two years reflects the benefits of the dual registration system, with Waller playing firstly for Coventry and then Moseley while learning his trade in the lower leagues. His first team debut came in November 2010, and so far he has amassed 42 first team appearances, a man of the match award in the European Challenge Cup quarter final win at Sale Sharks and the Saints’ Young Player of the Season award in 2014. James Craig is another young forward to pen a new agreement. The 26-year-old lock forward has played 36 times for the Saints so far in his career, after moving to the Saints in 2011, and has played in three LV= Cup finals and stood out with his performances in the knockout stages of the 2013/14 European Challenge Cup-winning campaign. Gareth Denman is in his second season at Franklin’s Gardens. The 24-year-old cut his propping teeth in the Championship with Leeds and Rotherham before moving down the M1 to the East Midlands, and has earned plenty of plaudits – not to mention a couple of winners’ medals, too – for his performances thus far in his 37 appearances. Director of rugby Jim Mallinder said that he was delighted that all seven players had put pen to paper. “We have a group that has shown time and again that they have the ability to compete at the highest level of club rugby, and retaining players is very important to us,” he said. “The seven forwards that we have announced today are all good players already, but they still have the ability to improve and we are looking forward to seeing them develop further at Franklin’s Gardens.” |

Originally this posting was in another thread and responded to comments that on this date, 12 months ago, Tom Vickers of the Chronicle & Echo was leaking details of contract renewals and why had this not happened this year. I do realise that by merging of my posting with other threads some other comments now appear above and I may consequently appear a little foolish... So no change then.
The benefit of hindsight is a wonderful thing

Yes, but, 100 years ago lots of soldiers were getting ready to play football in no-man's land on Christmas Day.
The only thing we can learn from history is that things change.

The absences from the list, however, make me a tad nervous.
It suggests Courtney is close to re-signing too and it's looking hopeful for Myler and George Pisi re-signing.
It sounds like our strategy is to go for 3 year contracts for big players after we tied Corbs and North for 3 years.
Church's Stand, Block R, at the back noisily making lots of noise
Irrespective of how it gets out that's excellent news all round.

Top of the League 2014-2015 Season
What a statement from the club
And what a great message to any potential (No 8 and tight head especially!) quality players considering us

What a statement from the club
There is no statement from the club.
Apparently the paper is taking a flyer on what it has read on this site!

What if there were no hypothetical questions?

Either it will happen
or it will fail
or it will change
Dylan was not wise to announce it (even to a private gathering) until it was signed - but that's his call.
If I hear something privately, while I may discuss it, publishing it without cover is not something I would recommend.
As I recall it was given as an intention. The DM states it as fact.

Hopefully it is just Samu and Ma'afu leaving.
We've lost some big names like Tiny, Mooj, Downey, Wilson, Kruger and Bruce and still managed to improve or maintain each year under Jim.
I'm hoping we'll see a couple of top draw signings to offset their alleged loss.
Not a bad start to the day!
This does imply that if Manoa and Ma'afu are both out of contract with us at the end of this season that they haven't renewed.

I assume, as per last year, we'll have a similar sized list of backs to be happy about next week. Excellent
We'll not hold back on stories which the club will not comment on in future. This is after all a news site, not facebook.

Great news. What a fillip for the club!
We've signed fillip too? Great news. I thought he was of to Sarries for sure
All the signings are very good news. Very pleased that both Wallers have recommitted and thrilled that Lawes has decided to stay. It reflects very well on both the club and the players that they see their futures at Saints.
Is there a normal date that "new" signings are announced as opposed to re-signings?
So perhaps it will put an end to the endless gibberish....................................until next time !

Ed's note: The players have a right to a private life - personal details such as you posted Edward, whether true or otherwise, are not appropriate for this forum. Ta.

Would rather see a promotion from within than pinch another clubs product.

You are correct on both counts
Magnus Lund?
*I could agree with you - but then we'd both be wrong...*

Don't need and had way too many issues with concussion.
I am liking the Brookes rumour even if it originated here and has no basis in fact.

Apparently Bordeaux have just announced they've signed AAC to join them after the world cup.
I'm worried that we forgot to worry about the likes of Ale. And Ethan being out of contract *
I am delighted about all of these re-signings of course.

Actually the Rugby Paper mentioned it

To openly talk about players careers is one thing (and probably not unreasonable). To pass around rumours about personal life stuff is quite another and not necessary - in my personal opinion only, of course.
Just seen this and quite agree.
Edward's post above has been edited accordingly...
Quote:I understand both moves are more than just a rumourtedge
Lloydie do you mean you agree with CoventrianSaints' inference from a rumour he's heard or that you know that the rumour is a truth and his inference is correct - big difference ?!

So out of all the rumours agonised over on here only Samu turns out to be true. And that really wasn't a rumour as it was confirmed in the French press and shortly afterwards by Jim.
So perhaps it will put an end to the endless gibberish....................................until next time !
No chance. It's too much fun speculating!
Fortunately you can choose not to read our gibberish threads. Then we can all be happy.

I actually don't mind all the rumours and opinions being aired on here provided it is clearly stated as such. I don't have any inside line and appreciate hearing about the gossip/possibilities. Is that not one of the joys of a forum such as this?

I'm liking the sound of that. An England international so he is likely to stay rather than be tempted by French money. 19 and a half stone. 6 foot 2. Dorian will make him even better.
We could end up with 4 of the first-choice England tight five. And plenty of pundits rate the England tight 5 as the best tight 5 in the world.
Not bad for a club side. Sounds like Leicester of yesteryear. To top it all off Cockers let him go.
Please let it be true!

Brookes? But it's not January yet?
It wasn't January when everyone knew Burns was moving to Leicester, Ford to Bath and Ashton to Sarries.
Agents are interested in money. Not in sticking to the rules.
If you wish to continue pontificating and agonising about things that never happen that is your prerogative. As it is mine to shake my head and chuckle.
